Online food delivery applications are now part of the growing modern technology world. The demand for online food delivery services kept growing as the working people found very little time to actually prepare their own meals. This pandemic, the demand for food delivery apps seems to have reached a much higher peak.

Along with the rise in demand, came the expanse of choices. Customers now have the power to choose a service based on convenience. They can place orders from a wide array of restaurants with a single tap on their mobile phone. Moreover, they can choose to swap between any brand based on the offers that come with it.

Check out our findings collected from the Real Research online survey application, and find out what exactly triggers a user’s decision when choosing a food delivery app.

From a total of 300,000, the majority (74.45%) are using food delivery apps, while only 25.55% are not using this kind of application. When asked how many times per week they use a food delivery application, over half of the respondents (53.04%) use it 1-2 times a week. In addition, 22.63% of the participants admitted that they are using it 3-4 times a week, and 8.68% of them use food delivery apps more than 5 times a week.

Most of them discovered these food delivery apps through social media advertisements (34.70%). While others heard from ads on TV & Radio (26.10%), billboards (16.37%), newspapers (4.77%), online platforms (2.58%), and 1.46% from seeing the delivery bike/car on the streets.

Based on this survey, the people who are using the apps like using it for different reasons. 42.95% like food delivery apps because they get to choose from a variety of menus. 30.30% said they use it for convenience as they don’t need to physically travel to a restaurant anymore.

Other reasons why the majority use these apps are the following. (9.31%) do not have time to cook at home, (2.55%) thinks it’s safer at home during the pandemic, (2.35%) wants to avoid directly facing bad weather. This makes sense as it’s very uncomfortable to go out during the peak of summer or when it’s raining or snowing.

1.31% think they can make the best of discounted deals when using food delivery apps. Some of them (0.86%) think it’s the best way to discover new restaurants and new menus. The rest 0.33% just want to avoid direct face-to-face customer service or any other direct interactions.

On another note, the few who do not use food delivery apps were asked what they dislike about it. 37.80% said it takes a lot of time to deliver the food, 24.16% prefer home-cooked meals, 12.41% think it often delivers wrong orders especially during peak hours or weekends. Some (5.17%) find it expensive, while 2.01% do not like answering calls to coordinate their orders.

Other reasons they don’t use it are as follows, ‘The food usually goes cold by the time of delivery (1.94%), ‘I prefer physically visiting restaurants’ (1.62%), ‘The quality and quantity of food may be compromised due to high demand for deliveries’ (1.10%), and ‘I do not like the look or presentation of delivered food’ (0.78%).

Best Features of Food Delivery Apps

Discount or reward offers (27.13%) had the most votes when asked which feature the respondents found essential. Second, ‘Push Notifications’ (22.85%), third, having cashback or loyalty programs in the app (19.40%), and fourth, offering real-time GPS tracking of food delivery (12.34%). Other features that the minority find essential are the variety in payment options, social media integration, diversity in food options, and app reviews.

Meanwhile, the respondents think food delivery apps need a faster registration process for first-time users (39.86%). Also, (26.24%) think the real-time updates on menu availability should be improved. 12.28% of the survey participants think the apps should be developed further by adding more payment options like crypto payment. Other features that respondents think can be improved are live tracking availability (3.89%), lower delivery fees (2.08%), more discounts and deals (2.07%), better customer support (1.53%), and user interface improvement (0.48%).

When Do You Use Food Delivery Apps

The majority of the respondents use food delivery apps when they are in family gatherings (30.42%) and when friends or guests arrive at their place (20.24%). Some of them use it during parties (16.17%) to avoid cooking or preparing a spread or meals. However, some 12.71% use the apps anytime they get hungry. 1.01% order online whenever they have no time to cook, (2.30%) order online after a long tiring day. The rest (0.91%) use food delivery apps on special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, or any other celebrations.

Apparently, 24.89% of the respondents use food delivery apps during breakfast. With just a small difference, 20.66% order the most during dinner, and 19.95% find it useful during lunch.

Meanwhile, 11.68% of the respondents seem to enjoy using food delivery apps for their evening snacks. 4.53% order for a midnight meal, and (6.24%) just have random timings when they tend to use a food delivery app to satisfy small cravings like froyo or cookies.

Lastly, when asked what they consider most crucial when using a food delivery app, almost 30% think delivery time matters most. 18.67% look at user reviews and 17.34% believe the presentation of food is crucial for them.

Exactly 11% want to receive hot food, so this factor is most crucial for them when deciding to use an app. 10.64% value the cleanliness of the delivery man and how nice the food packaging looks. Some (1.84%) consider a seamless payment option as the most crucial factor, while (1.72%) prioritize the variety of menus.
