To determine the host status of a World Cup, the nations participate in a bidding process. Finally, a vote will decide which nation wins the host status. Following Qatar’s selection as host of the FIFA World Cup 2022, several questions have been raised about the integrity of the FIFA World Cup bidding process on top of several other controversies.

Real Research took the opportunity to launch a survey on the controversies surrounding the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 to gather what the public feels about it.

What Was the Biggest Amongst the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Controversies?

Qatar has been accused of ‘sport washing’ in its criticism of various cases of human rights abuse, particularly concerning the treatment of migrants and LGBTQ+. Media outlets, sports experts, and human rights organizations have criticized Qatar’s limited football history, high cost, hot climate, and bribery in the bidding process.

According to a report, more than two dozen FIFA officials and associates have been implicated in an interlocking scheme of twenty-four years. It revolved around allegations of bribery associated with awarding Qatar the hosting rights to the 2022 World Cup.

Numerous reports found Qatar was also involved in other controversies. When asked about which ones respondents were aware of, 11.64% responded saying the ‘alcohol bans’, 10.65% said the bribery allegations, 9.72% suggested the women’s rights violations, 9.44% responded with ‘migrant workers’ mistreatment and deaths among others.

Out of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Controversies, Which Were Believed To Be True?

Since being the host country of the World Cup comes with many lucrative benefits like the influx of tourism, media coverage, and revenue for the host country— measures are taken to ensure objectivity and fairness in the selection process.

However, several concerns have been raised about the integrity of the FIFA World Cup bidding process following Qatar’s selection as host of the FIFA World Cup 2022. In addition, this has raised questions about Qatar’s viability as a host country.

We found out that bribery was the top controversy that was believed to be true with 16.79%. Followed by the alcohol ban at 11.89%. 10.41% believed the women’s rights violation to be true and 9.75% of migrant workers mistreatment and deaths to be true. It was interesting to note that 12.75% of the respondents believed that none of these conspiracies were true.

Despite Controversies, Was FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Successful?

The controversies sparked a great deal of aversion to the event. About 23.34% of our polls believed these controversies to be completely true and 13.62% were not enjoying the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

Despite the prominent vacant seats, Qatar World Cup 2022 attendance has reportedly exceeded the available seating. FIFA president Sepp Blatter has said that awarding Qatar hosting rights was a mistake, and several countries, football clubs, and players have withdrawn from the event as a result.

Hence, we set out to take a poll on how successful they think the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 will be, and here’s what we found out.

Amidst all the controversies and marring, public opinion stands with the FIFA World Cup being hosted successfully by Qatar at 64.76%. While 16.27% felt against it, 18.97% felt unsure about it. 20.86% of the public says Qatar’s hosting so far has been excellent.
