Pay gaps generally occur for a multitude of reasons, such as differences in qualifications, skills, experiences, and so on. Most grounds for pay gaps are valid. However, some factors, such as gender, as a reason for the difference in pay may be called unreasonable. The gender pay gap can be referred to as the difference in pay between men and women who are working. For decades, this form of difference has been the topic most discussed and protested about.

The participation of women in the labor force has increased significantly since the second half of the 20th century. Working longer hours, investing more in further education, and widening their experience, and yet, more often than not, pay is reportedly not equal for women compared to men.

What’s more, the gender pay gap is not restricted to a particular industry; rather, it is widely practiced in several industries. The unequal pay between genders ranges from finance, arts and entertainment, media and publication, scientific or technical, educational services, construction, healthcare, and more.

Statistics show that in 2020, Korea will be among the countries with the highest gender pay gaps, reportedly by 31.5%. This means that men, on average, get paid 31.5% more than women for the same role. Contrastingly, Belgium was reportedly the country with the most equal pay, with a difference of 3.79%.

This goes on to probe possible causes for the difference in pay. Most commonly suggested are differences in experience, qualifications, skills, and the like. There are, however, arguments against it. For this reason, Real Research launched a survey seeking public opinion on the widening gender pay gap.
