The elections for the next prime minister of the United Kingdom are on the way, and now the candidates have narrowed to two people — Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss. Both political candidates were major figures in Boris Johnson’s cabinet, and now they’re setting out their policy platforms as they branch out from the former prime minister.

Rishi Sunak, notably, if elected would be the first non-white prime minister of the United Kingdom. Sunak was the former Chancellor of the Exchequer and has led in every voting round so far at the time of writing. Rishi Sunak’s strategy has been all about distancing himself from former prime minister Boris Johnson, stating several “disagreements” to appeal to those fed up with Johnson’s scandals.

On the other hand, Liz Truss, if elected, would be the third female prime minister of the United Kingdom. Previously, Truss was the Secretary of State for International Trade of the United Kingdom. Truss, on the other hand, remains in Johnson’s caretaker government even after dozens of ministers have already resigned. In regards to Johnson’s controversies, she insists that she was bound by the cabinet’s “collective responsibility”.

These candidates are in a race to succeed former United Kingdom prime minister Boris Johnson. Both candidates’ dueling was already widely predicted at the start of the contest as they were considered Conservative heavyweights who held two of the most senior positions in Johnson’s administration. Boris Johnson has not publicly endorsed any candidate in the race so far.
