Netflix’s Dahmer series, produced by true crime and horror fan Ryan Murphy, is praised for shedding light on how police failed the 17 victims of Jeffrey Dahmer, most of whom were Black. However, it is difficult to draw any positive conclusions from the show given the show’s many criticisms, including the depiction of Dahmer that has endeared him to some fans.

Despite its popularity, it is also one of the most controversial Netflix series ever released. The series has been criticized for its disturbing portrayals of events and its traumatizing retelling of stories about the brutal murders and dismemberments of several young men. The most striking example is Rita Isbell’s emotional victim impact statement, reproduced verbatim for the show, resurfacing emotions the real-life Isbell did not want to revisit.

Like most true crime stories, the story’s primary focus is on facts. It highlights well-known details about Dahmer’s troubled childhood, long-held fascination with death, extreme loneliness, and rituals he often performed to keep his victims close after their deaths. These ritualistic and heinous acts include cooking and eating their body parts. The story is sensitive, so it’s hard to tell it tastefully.

It’s hard not to like Evan Peters’ rendition of the titular character, arguably too well. Even though Peters wasn’t trying to make Dahmer seem sympathetic, he portrays him as a lost soul whose warped fantasies got the best of him.

Furthermore, the storylines appear to be spoon-fed to the viewers in an attempt to explain the circumstances that led to Dahmer’s actions.

There is no doubt that Netflix’s show will be remembered for its rejection by Dahmer’s victims’ families and for how it was received on social media.
