Receiving backlash is expected in art; writers, filmmakers, actors, and songwriters all receive backlash for many reasons. Some for inappropriate, insensitive, offensive, or controversial content/material.

One prominent writer known precisely for his controversial work is Salman Rushdie. Salman Rushdie is a prominent Indian-born, British-American writer and novelist most celebrated for his award-winning work such as The Midnight Children, and many others. Almost a decade into writing and publishing, Rushdie received his first backlash for this 1988 novel, The Satanic Verses.

The backlash against his 1988 book had offended certain religious beliefs of Muslims, in particular, some even going far as to call it “blasphemous.” Eventually, the backlash escalated to Rushdie receiving multiple death threats that lasted for years. Since then, Rushdie has been living under a constant threat to his life as a consequence of his writing. He recalls in interviews what he thought was only temporary backlash that went on to last for close to a decade.

On August 12, 2022, Rushdie was ambushed and attacked by a suspect who lunged and stabbed the writer multiple times. The suspect, later identified as Hadi Matar, was eventually arrested and brought to custody for investigation. As a result of the attack, however, Rushdie sustained multiple “serious” injuries, including 3 stab wounds to his neck, 4 to his stomach, 1 each to his right eye and thigh, and a cut to his thigh. It was apparent that the attack was pre-meditated, however, officials have been doing their best to apprehend Matar.
