Face mask regulations have been mandatory in the UAE for more than two and a half years. The UAE has been a global leader in its immunization efforts, with 100% of the eligible population receiving the vaccine by November 2021. Eventually, authorities in the UAE relaxed most COVID safety regulations as the number of daily infections continued to fall, and deaths from the virus remained almost zero for nearly three months.

Accordingly, the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) of the UAE declared on Monday to repeal its Covid-19 mask requirements as of Wednesday, September 28, 2022. NCEMA tweeted that masks will still be necessary for medical institutions and hospitals, mosques, places of worship, and public transportation. Mosque distance rules, however, will be lifted.

Face masks will not be required in schools. Even so, those suspected of being infected must still wear a face mask. NCEMA also advises all patients with chronic conditions to continue wearing masks.

In addition, PCR testing is now only required if symptoms are present. Those who were in contact with Covid-19-infected patients will be subjected to a PCR test and monitored for seven days. Those infected with Covid-19 will be quarantined for five days.

Regarding travel restrictions, individual airlines can now determine whether or not to require masks on board for passengers. In the UAE, travelers will not be subject to departure restrictions, while the destination countries will determine entry requirements on arrival. The rules for visitors’ arrival in the UAE remain unchanged. Another big announcement is that the UAE will no longer broadcast daily infection cases-related data.

The UAE was consistently ranked first in the world regarding how successfully nations managed Covid-19 while also reopening their economies. In October, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, then Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, stated that the UAE had “overcome the Covid-19 issue” and urged residents to return to normalcy. Now, this is finally coming to a reality. The survey aims to seek public perception of returning to a life of normalcy after two and a half years.
