Modern-day forms of entertainment have mainly been reduced to the mere streaming of movies, shows, documentaries, etc. on various OTT platforms. OTT platforms (over-the-top) are a form of entertainment that offers viewers media services directly via the internet.

Much earlier, people sought entertainment from cable TV, and live broadcasting, to VCDs, DVDs, and pay-per-view to the present-day streaming via the internet, anytime, anywhere. Most prefer streaming online because it is convenient, affordable, and offers a wide range of tens of thousands of movies and shows. In traditional entertainment options, this was not the case; viewers only watch what they manage to catch on television broadcasts.

As such, the most popular OTT streaming platforms these days are Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Disney+, Disney+ Hotstar, HBO, OSN, and YouTube, among others.

Additionally, the rise of COVID-19 in 2020 and its subsequent lockdowns and isolations enabled many, including ‘outgoing’ people, to resort to the use of such OTT streaming services.

Consequently, these services saw an increase in revenues, some of the highest in months. In fact, in 2021, Netflix saw some of its highest revenues of $24.9 billion post-COVID and an operating profit worth $5.1 billion the same year. This was at least an 85% increase in profits year-on-year, indicating the rise of such OTT streaming platforms.

To seek a better and deeper understanding of consumer behavior when it comes to streaming services, Real Research launched a survey on the rise of OTT streaming platforms. The survey aims to gauge more insights into modern-day choices of entertainment.
