Jakarta has been the capital of Indonesia since its independence in 1949. Over the years, better opportunities, standards of living, and growth in Jakarta brought many settlers to the city. President Joko Widodo stated, however, that he plans to move the capital of Jakarta to a Borneo island called ‘Nusantara’ by 2019. Due to the pandemic, relocation plans were halted but will be completed by 2024.

The relocation of Indonesia’s capital comes from concerns of overpopulation in Jakarta. The city with a population of 10 million people has also brought on concerns about pollution, regular floodings, etc. To make matters worse, Jakarta is also one of the fastest sinking cities in the world due to an over-extraction of groundwater.

It was in light of the above that the parliament passed bills reasoning the relocation. Thus, the relocation hopes to curb issues of overpopulation, congestion, and suffocation in the city. However, it is important to accommodate a shift like this in terms of appropriate funding, architecture, and facilities are required. Nevertheless, Indonesia is ensuring every necessary step be taken to allocate this major change. Accordingly, the public has their opinions.

A move as major as a capital relocation will also bring numerous changes to the residents of Jakarta. Where some may look forward to such changes, others may not necessarily find it positive. Thus, Real Research launched a survey seeking public opinions on the relocation of Indonesia’s capital.
