Mauna Loa is one of the largest volcanoes in the world that had been dormant for nearly four decades until recently. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the Mauna Loa erupted at 11:30 p.m. local time Sunday (4:30 a.m. Eastern Time Monday).
According to the Hawaii Volcano Observatory daily update, it was the first eruption since 1984. The agency said that the eruption began in Moku’āweoweo, the summit caldera of Mauna Loa, inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Fifteen minutes after the eruption, inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the USGS reported that the flows of lava remained “contained” within the summit caldera of Mauna Loa. Still, the eruption could pose a threat to nearby residents should conditions change.
“At this time, lava flows are contained within the summit area and are not threatening downslope communities,” the USGS said on its website, noting that residents of the area should review preparedness procedures.
Residents at risk from Mauna Loa lava flows were advised to “review preparedness and refer to Hawai’i County Civil Defense information for further guidance.”
The most recent eruption followed after weeks of warnings from officials that an eruption was possible given a recent spike in earthquakes at the volcano’s summit and that residents of the Big Island should be prepared to evacuate, NBC affiliate KHNL of Hawaii reported.
The USGS has upgraded the volcano’s alert level from an “advisory” to a “warning.”
