A group of several individuals, including Olympic medalists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik,  was detained for their involvement in a protest against the Indian Wrestling Federation’s president, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. This sparked nationwide criticism against the officials and the government.

  • Officials detained Olympic medalists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, and others on Sunday, May 28, 2023
  • The arrest was reportedly due to the protests made against the Indian Wrestling Federation president, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is alleged to have been involved in sexual abuse cases
  • The protests began in January and halted when all powers were stripped from Singh. However, the protests resumed in April, demanding his immediate arrest

The protests demanding Singh’s immediate arrest began in January, after which he was stripped of all administrative powers by the sports ministry. The protests were withdrawn.

However, on April 23, the protests resumed and have continued since, demanding Singh’s arrest.

On May 28, the wrestlers and their supporters were arrested after scuffles broke out in front of parliament as they intensified their protests, demanding the arrest of their federation chief over sexual harassment allegations.

Malik alleged that the protests were peaceful in nature; however, the police say the contrary, that the protestors broke barricades, etc., and that the protests were anything but peaceful.

The police then reportedly filed a First Information Report (FIR), citing reasons such as rioting and “causing an obstruction in the duty of a public servant with the use of assault and criminal force,” etc.

This, however, gained the criticism of many as the wrestlers are Olympic medalists and were dragged harshly, according to evidence submitted by the media.

This also resulted in tightened security measures in Delhi, where the protests took place.
