On April 14, the Republican-controlled Florida legislature approved a ban on abortions after six weeks of pregnancy. This ban will impact abortion access in the South following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, allowing states to make decisions about abortion access.

DeSantis later signed the bill into law, stating, “We are proud to support life and family in the state of Florida.” Prior to this, Florida prohibited abortions after 15 weeks. This six-week ban will take effect only if the state’s current 15-week ban is upheld in an ongoing legal challenge before the state supreme court.

Democrats and abortion-rights groups have criticized Florida’s proposal as extreme because many women do not realize they are pregnant until after six weeks. The bill contains some exceptions, including to save the woman’s life, and abortions for pregnancies involving rape or incest would be allowed until 15 weeks of pregnancy.

The Republican representative Jenna Persons-Mulicka, who carried the bill in the house, said, “We have the opportunity to lead the national debate about the importance of protecting life and giving every child the opportunity to be born and find his or her purpose.”

Additionally, the bill also restricts the dispensing of drugs used in medication-induced abortions, which make up the majority of those provided nationally. Under the Florida bill, these drugs can only be dispensed in person or by a physician.

However, abortion bans have proven to be a contentious issue that has motivated many to vote for Democrats, particularly among those who support abortion access.
