Real Madrid football player Vinicius Jr was subject to racial abuse in the match against Valencia FC on May 21, 2023.

  • On Sunday’s match against Valencia FC, Real Madrid forward was subject to racial abuse by fans of the opposing team
  • Vinicius expresses that racial abuse in LaLiga matches is not new and has been happening time and again
  • Vinicius remarks that  “La Liga belongs to racists”

This was seemingly not the first time the player was racially discriminated against. He expressed in a tweet that such racial abuse has occurred many times in La Liga.

Reportedly, in the 73rd minute, a spectator directed himself towards player No. 20 of Real Madrid CF, Mr. Vinicius José De Oliveira Do Nascimiento, screaming at him: “Monkey, monkey.” This led to an enraged Vinicius engaging with the fans in question.

Apart from the abuse, Vinicius was also resentful at how La Liga handled the issue now and in the past.

In a tweet, La Liga president Javier Tebas alleged that Vinicius was absent from two meetings to discuss racism. He added, “Before you criticize and slander La Liga, you must inform yourself properly.”

This raises questions about how La Liga handles matters about racism and their general stance on racial discrimination.

The above resulted in Vinicius expressing concerns that “La Liga belongs to racists.”

Many from the football federation have also come in solidarity with Vinicius, including Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio, and others.
