Netflix is finally reportedly cracking down on password and account sharing in the U.S. and the UK markets.

  • Netflix rolled out restrictions on password and account sharing to subscribers in the U.S. and the U.K. markets
  • The move is an attempt to help it grow its subscriptions and profits amid slowing interest in the streaming platform
  • Specifically, restrictions are based on Netflix’s claim that an account can be used by only one “household”

Netflix is an online subscription-based streaming platform that offers a wide range of movies, series, and documentaries. As one of the leading streaming platforms, it was reported that Netflix has up to 232.5 million subscribers worldwide as of the first quarter of 2023.

One of the platform’s perks was that it offered the option to stream across multiple user profiles in one account. This gave room to account and password sharing, which became a challenge for Netflix, especially as revenues and profits decreased considerably during 2022, with the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war.

Netflix’s solution to this was to restrict the use of one account across multiple “households” in the U.S. and the U.K. While the definition of “household” is seemingly vague, what the platform essentially means is that an account that is registered for one address cannot be used by individuals belonging to another address.

This has essentially enraged millions of users in the States and the U.K., leaving many to consider other alternatives.

However, Netflix was seeing a drop in revenues throughout most of 2022, triggered by the Russia-Ukraine war, economic downturns, etc.

While the platform’s latest crackdown on account and password sharing is limited to the U.S. and the U.K., whether Netflix plans to implement it worldwide is currently unknown.
