Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is reportedly working on a new app codenamed “Project 92” that aims to challenge Twitter’s dominance in the social media sphere. According to reports, a top Meta executive shared a preview of the upcoming app with employees during a company meeting.

Based on the popular photo-sharing platform Instagram, the app will integrate with the decentralized social media protocol ActivityPub. This integration will allow users of the new app to seamlessly migrate their accounts and followers to other apps that support ActivityPub, such as Mastodon.

Meta’s chief product officer, Chris Cox, revealed that the new app would leverage Instagram’s account system to populate user information. Although the public name of the app is yet to be finalized, it is speculated to be called “Threads.” Meta claims to have secured commitments from celebrities like DJ Slime and is reportedly in discussions with influential figures like Oprah Winfrey and The Dalai Lama.

Project 92’s development began in January, and the Meta executive stated that the app would be available soon. The timing of this release is noteworthy, as Twitter faces backlash over its handling of the social media platform under its new owner, Elon Musk.

As Meta prepares to release “Project 92,” the Twitter rival, the competition in the social media landscape is intensifying. How this new app will resonate with users and whether it can disrupt Twitter’s hold on the microblogging market remains to be seen.
