On March 11, 2011, following a 9.0 magnitude earthquake known as the Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent tsunami, a major nuclear accident occurred. The disaster caused extensive damage to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, releasing large amounts of radioactive materials into the air and ocean and causing widespread contamination in the surrounding area.

Ten Years Later

The 20-kilometer exclusion zone around the plant remains largely uninhabited to this day. The aftermath of the disaster has been a slow and ongoing process of what authorities said to be a 40-year cleanup and decommissioning of the damaged reactors.

There has been growing urgency over what to do with more than a million tons of water used to cool the power station, still kept at the site, as its storage space is running out. In response, the Japanese government has proposed releasing the contaminated water into the ocean after ‘treating’ and reducing the radioactive materials.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Japan’s proposal is safe yet remains a public issue with opposition from both domestic and international organizations. Some scientists say the water would quickly be diluted in the vastness of the ocean and that tritium poses a low risk to human and animal health. Critics of the plan, on the other hand, are concerned about the potential risks and harm to the environment and local communities. They also argue that there may be alternative options that are safer and more sustainable.

Real Research launched a survey on this as Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) plans to discharge treated water from the damaged power station starting as early as this spring despite global concerns.

Hence, hurry and answer the survey on Japan releasing contaminated water from Fukushima power plant to the ocean on the Real Research app from February 11, 2023. After that, you will receive 70 TNCs as a reward.
