For the first time, Japan has approved an abortion pill to terminate early-stage pregnancies of up to nine weeks. The decision comes after the health ministry approved a drug made by Linepharma, a British pharmaceutical company.

Up until the approval, the only approved way to terminate a pregnancy was through a surgical procedure, however, the newly-approved pill is a major win for activists who sought government approval of abortion pills.

Abortion Pill Approval– a Win?

While news of the approval has received admirable opinions from Japanese citizens, taking the pill itself has a few limitations. For one, the abortion pill is only significantly effective till nine weeks of pregnancy. The effectiveness significantly reduces after nine weeks of pregnancy. This is seemingly concerning as a fair share of women may be unaware of their pregnancy at that stage.

Another limitation of the approved abortion pill is that it requires prior consent from the partner or the spouse. This raises questions about the right of women over the decisions of their own bodies.

¥100,000 Abortion Pill

According to the Japanese national broadcaster NHK, the total cost of the abortion pill alongside consultation would cost ¥100,000 ($737). This has led many to argue that the pill would not be affordable to women of low-income households. Furthermore, the pill is reportedly not covered under public health insurance. This has also resulted in a series of concerns from many.

Overall, the recent approval of the abortion pill in Japan is a big step towards progress. Activists are now pushing for approval of emergency contraception, such as the morning-after pill, as it still requires a doctor’s approval. Moreover, it should reportedly be taken in front of a pharmacist to prevent it from being sold on the black market.
