Countless media sites have covered the recent changes at the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) under new Co-Presidents James Gunn and Peter Safran’s 10-year plan. Notably, the new leadership has scrapped several planned DCEU movies and is reported even to recast established characters and actors. As a result, the future of the DCEU is currently a mystery to the public.

One of the most notable changes is the cancellation of Patty Jenkins’ third Wonder Woman installment, Wonder Woman 3. Despite Wonder Woman (2017) being a commercial success and becoming one of the ten highest-grossing movies in 2017, Gunn and Safran have reportedly pulled the plug on the upcoming film.

Furthermore, Jaume Collet-Serra’s Black Adam (2021) is reportedly not getting a sequel under Gunn and Safran’s leadership. Speculations for this decision mostly refer to the film grossing $389 million worldwide against a production budget of $195-230 million, thus some labeling it a box-office bomb.

Jason Momoa as Aquaman is also reportedly going to be recast as another DC character, Lobo. Momoa first appeared as Arthur Curry/Aquaman in the film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and then Justice League (2017) before appearing in his solo film Aquaman (2018). Despite Momoa’s several appearances as the character, reports say that he will still be recast under Gunn and Safran’s plans.

Amidst all the reported DCEU changes, there were also reports that Henry Cavill’s future as Superman was not guaranteed. Black Adam’s Dwayne Johnson revealed that the previous DCEU leaders – before Gunn and Safran – were not keen on having Cavill back, but Johnson pushed for Cavill’s return anyway.

However, James Gunn reassured fans on Twitter that Superman was a priority for their DCEU plans. When asked to debunk the claims that Gunn does not like Henry Cavill, Gunn responded with a succinct “false.”

On December 8, James Gunn broke his silence regarding all the rumors, speculations, and outcry over the reported DCEU changes.
