India has embarked on a research and innovation partnership with California in the field of zero-emission cars to accelerate the growth of its budding electric vehicle (EV) industry and address climate issues.

California boasts the most advanced zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) legislation in the world and an aggressive 100% ZEV policy by 2035. As part of the partnership, the Davis Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California developed a new India ZEV Research Centre. The California-India ZEV Policy initiative aims to promote ZEV adoption in India. Moreover, it sets the country’s EV sector and contributes to industrial progress.

It would identify the potential for India to emerge as a strategic leader in the global ZEV transition in addition to addressing policy, technological, and investment strategies for a ZEV.

Deputy Chief of Mission, Indian Embassy, Sripriya Ranganathan, said that the State of California is probably the only regional government with the most comprehensive and oldest ZEV policy ecosystem. According to her, the California-India ZEV partnership will only strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two nations. She noted that it would boost the quantity of information and research brought to India’s transportation decarbonization policy process. There is also a chance to engage policymakers internationally in well-orchestrated initiatives.

According to the UC Davis India Center for Energy and Transportation, “while the two regions have unique differences, such as India’s large portfolio of two and three-wheelers, there are also common challenges, like [the] electrification of difficult-to-abate segments such as medium and heavy-duty trucks.”
