Recently, a devastating flood hit across Nigeria that displaced more than 600,000 people and took away lives of about 80+ people, according to the country’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). Additionally, 27 out of 36 states and the capital city. Besides, at least 16,00 homes and more than 1600 agricultural land have been damaged.

Officials blame unusual rainfalls, overwhelming water from local rivers, and the release of excess water from Cameroon’s Lagdo dam in the neighboring region.

NEMA Director, Mustapha Ahmed, stated:

The Lagdo dam operators in the Republic of Cameroun have commenced the release of excess water from the reservoir by September 13, 2022. We are aware that the released water cascades down to Nigeria through River Benue and its tributaries thereby inundating communities that have already been impacted by heavy precipitation.

Furthermore, research shows that the most affected states were Adamawa, Taraba, Plateau, Benue, and Kogi.

Regardless, the flood destroyed thousands of agricultural lands, including one of Nigeria’s largest agri-business companies, Olam Nigeria Limited; the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development stated that there is no need for concern about food insecurity because the country’s grain reserves are sufficient to feed everyone.

Nigeria is among the worst flooding along with Pakistan. Almost half of the country is submerged, and millions of people are displaced.
