On May 6, 2023, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and Afghanistan’s foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, pledged to strengthen trilateral ties among the three countries further. The countries have individual goals that they wish to pursue through this cooperation; Afghanistan hopes to attract Chinese investment, while China and Pakistan seek to strengthen their security ties with Afghanistan.
Afghanistan Is Aiming for Chinese Investments Into the Country
Ever since the withdrawal of the U.S. forces in late 2021 and the subsequent takeover of the Taliban, Afghanistan suffered a considerable economic and humanitarian crisis. This was mostly because the country plummeted into international isolation.
But through the use of its reserves of minerals such as copper and lithium, the Afghanistan government hopes to attract Chinese investment in an attempt to revive the Afghanistan economy.
Pakistan (and China) To Strengthen Security Ties With Afghanistan
On the other hand, attacks between the Afghanistan Taliban and the Pakistan Taliban, have increased lately. Through this trilateral union, Pakistan seeks to reduce the attacks and establish a more safe and secure area.
Whereas the Chinese government seems to be interested in the prospect of investing in various ventures in Afghanistan; however, they have also expressed concerns about security in the region, calling for more stability. Afghanistan has countered this by reassuring that it would not allow any armed group to use its territory against China and Pakistan.
