Taylor Swift Unsearchable on X

On January 27, pop star Taylor Swift’s name wasn’t searchable on X. This snag came after some nonconsensual sexually explicit deepfakes of the pop star went viral. Although there’s no concrete evidence as to where the images originated from, a watermark on the image gives a hint that it came from a website that was popular for publishing fake nudes of celebrities.

According to NBC, these images could be created using artificial intelligence tools or by capturing a real photo and “undressing” it. The photos were viewed more than 27 million times and had more than 260,000 likes in 19 hours before the account that posted them was suspended.

Fans to the Rescue

Many of Swift’s fans called out that these were deep fakes, and due to the mass reporting, the account was blocked. As such, the message “Something Went Wrong. Try Reloading” popped up on X when the popstar’s name was searched. Meanwhile, X has been called out in the past for its failure to quickly address sexually explicit deepfakes that pop up on the site.
