Each individual has a unique sleeping pattern. Some are most productive in the morning while others work better at night. Often, early birds both sleep and rise early while night owls stay awake at night and sleep through the day. Thus, sleeping patterns vary.

To understand these varying sleep patterns, Real Research launched a survey on being an early bird or a night owl. Here are the results.

  • 45.53% say the best part of being a night owl is watching the stars and moon peacefully.

Respondents Reveal What Time They Go To Sleep

The survey starts by asking respondents what trait defines them the best. The majority (25.49%) say they are dedicated early birds who wake up early even on non-work days. Next, 8.82% say they are morning birds who routinely wake early for work. In contrast, 6.43% say they are night owls because they love staying up at night. Lastly, 2.20% are night owls because they can’t sleep at night even if they want to.

Next, the survey asks respondents the time they prefer to go to bed. The majority (35.29%) say before 9 PM, 15.54% say between 9 PM-10 PM, and 13.68% say between 10 PM-11 PM. Likewise, 12.27% say between 11 PM-12 PM, and 10.23% say they sleep after midnight.

Further on, the survey asks at what time do respondents usually wake up? To this, the majority (34.27%) say they wake up before sunrise, 29.35% wake up between 6 AM-8 AM, 11.54% say between 8 AM-9 AM, and 7.67% say between 9 AM-11 AM. Adding on, 4.26% after 11 AM, 1.75% say they wake up at infrequent times as they work in shifts, and 0.54% wake up at infrequent times as they travel a lot.

Time of the Day Respondents Feel Most Physically Active

Carrying on, the survey asks at what time respondents feel most active physically. Almost half (48.53%) say ‘in the morning’, 12.72% say ‘around lunchtime’, and 11.63% say ‘mid-afternoon’. Adding on, 9.51% say ‘evening’, 2.97% say ‘around dinner time’, and 2.70% say ‘late at night’.

To add, the survey asks when respondents feel the most productive. Here, 61.65% say ‘after waking up from 6-8 hours of sleep’ 16.51% say ‘after staying awake the whole night.’ Meanwhile, 21.22% say ‘the few hours before I go to sleep’.

Next, the early bird or a night owl survey asks respondents whether staying awake till late hours puts one’s health at risk. On this, 48.66% say ‘it takes a toll on your mental health’ and 21.56% say ‘it affects physical health’. Likewise, 6.20% say they have heard people can become Schizophrenic. Moreover, 4.47% say ‘it causes fatigue’ and 3.09% say it ‘sparks insomnia’. In contrast, 4.11% say ‘not at all’.

Accordingly, the survey asks respondents how they could improve sleeping patterns. More than half (52.51%) suggest ‘regular exercise’, 12.84% say to avoid stimulant drinks, and 12.19% say to avoid screen time. Then, 9.20% suggest ‘practice waking up early’, 6.43% say ‘make a sleep schedule, and stick to it’ and 6.25% say ‘listen to relaxing music while trying to sleep’.

Respondents Early Bird or a Night Owl?

To highlight, the survey asks if respondents consider themselves to be an early bird or a night owl. In response, 67.70% say they are ‘early birds’ whereas, 32.30% are ‘night owls’.

The survey also asks about the advantages of being an early bird. Here, 45.70% say ‘catching the sunrise is a spiritual experience’. Addin on, 18% like the ‘quiet of the early morning’ and 6.54% like ‘seeing the sun light up the world’. Moreover, 6.18% say they can get more things done if they get an earlier start to the day. Lastly, 5.22% like the ‘fresh dewy morning air’.

Finally, the survey asks what the advantages of being a night owl are. The majority (43.53%) like to ‘watch the stars and moon peacefully’ while 15.69% like the night’s dead silence. Likewise, 8.47% feel like ‘the only person awake in the world’ while 4.56% are ‘more productive at night’.
