Real Madrid football player Vinícius Júnior was racially abused by fans in a match against Valencia FC on May 21, 2023, in a match against Valencia FC. This was seemingly not the first time the player was discriminated against on the grounds of race or culture. He tweeted that such racial abuse has occurred many times in La Liga.

Reportedly, in the 73rd minute, a spectator directed himself towards player No. 20 of Real Madrid CF, Mr. Vinicius José De Oliveira Do Nascimiento, screaming at him: “Monkey, monkey.”

This incident has given rise to global criticism about the prevalence of racism in this day and age. Many, including the Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, players, and others in the federation, have expressed solidarity with Junior.

In a press meet after the match, Ancelotti said: “Vinícius is upset, obviously, but more than upset, he is sad….”

Due to this, Junior remarks that “La Liga belongs to racists,” suggesting that there is racism in La Liga.

Real Research conducted a survey on Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior remarks that “La Liga belongs to racists” to see what the public has to say. Here are the highlights of the survey:

  • 63.8% strongly agree with the decision to permanently ban the fans who expressed racial slurs in a match between Real Madrid and Valencia FC
  • 53.68% strongly agree with how La Liga’s president, Javier Tebas, dealt with the racism incident
  • 45.47% feel it was justified to issue Junior a red card for his violent behavior

Awareness

The survey starts by asking respondents about their awareness of the incident involving two opposing team fans screaming racial slurs from the crowd. 69% are aware, while 31% are unaware.

Moreover, this is not the first and only time that Vinicius was subject to racism and racial discrimination on racial grounds in this season. These discriminations have reportedly occurred on multiple occasions. When asked about this awareness, a majority of 65% said they were aware of this. In contrast, 65% said that they were not.

According to reports, Valencia identified the fans who were involved in expressing racial slurs and were potentially given permanent stadium bans. When asked whether respondents agree with the decision, 64% strongly agree, while 25% somewhat agree.

On the other hand, 4% somewhat disagree and 1% strongly disagree. Meanwhile, 6.27% were unsure.

The incident mandated that La Liga take action against the concerned parties who made the racial remarks against Vinicius. However, La Liga president Javier Tebas countered, saying that Vinicius was absent from two meetings reportedly to discuss the issue of racism. He also added, “Before you criticize and slander La Liga, you must inform yourself properly.”

Vinicius differed with Tebas’ opinion and said he should criticize the “racists” involved rather than him.

Accordingly, the survey asked the respondents if they agreed with how La Liga dealt with the situation. 54% strongly agreed with how La Liga dealt with the problem, while 29% somewhat agreed. In contrast, only 11% somewhat disagreed and 6% strongly disagreed.

Junior Being Given a Red Card

The Real Madrid forward, after the incident, was seemingly behaving violently and was involved in a mass altercation, also involving Valencia’s striker, Hugo Duro. Junior was eventually ushered away and given a red card. 45% feel this was justified, while 35% feel it was unjustified. 19% were unsure.

The incident affected Ancelotti considerably. In a post-match press meet, he expressed that it is unacceptable for an entire stadium to be chanting discriminatory remarks. He also suggested that there are plenty of things that La Liga could have done to address the situation, such as stopping the match and so on.

Given the number of measures La Liga could have taken to ensure the incident was dealt with correctly, the respondents were asked whether La Liga dealt with the matter appropriately.

52% felt La Liga dealt with the incident highly appropriately, while 21% felt it was somewhat appropriate. On the other hand, 9% felt that they dealt with it somewhat inappropriately, and another 9% said highly inappropriately.

10% were unsure.

The above suggests that there could be racism in La Liga, as per Junior’s claims.

As such, there were questions about whether Vincius’ reaction to the incident was appropriate. 69% agreed that Vinicius’ reaction to the incident was understandable, while 31% felt the opposite.

The Racial Remarks, Indicative of Spain’s Views on Racial Matters?

The fact that numerous people were chanting racial slurs against a Black player could possibly be an indication of the country’s stance towards matters concerning racism. When asked about this, 41% of respondents felt that was probably true, while 33% felt it was definitely true. 14% and 3% of respondents felt it probably was not and definitely not, respectively.

9% of respondents were unsure.

Finally, the respondents were asked if they agreed with Vinicius’ statement that “La Liga belongs to racists.” 31% strongly agree that there is racism in La Liga, while 35% somewhat agree.

Moreover, 18% somewhat disagree that there is racism in La Liga and 5% strongly disagree with the opinion.

11% were unsure.
