Colors mean more than just visual perceptual properties. Society has associated each color to represent different feelings and emotions. Over time, these meanings and associations have changed. Moreover, Colors mean different things to different people based on experiences, cultures, and more.

Thus, Real Research launched a survey to find out how the public associates colors and emotions. Specifically, answering the question of ‘how colors make you feel’ from respondents’. Here are the results.

Highlights

  • 40.72% prefer warm colors such as red, orange, and yellow.
  • 56.15% say owning items in gold or silver gives a feeling of ‘higher importance’.
  • 35.52% associate the color orange with youth.

Most Respondents Prefer Warm Colors

Associated with color psychology, the survey starts by asking respondents whether each color invokes different feelings. The majority (75.20%) said ‘yes’ whereas 11.17% said ‘no’. Additionally, 13.63% said ‘sometimes’.

Next, the color association survey asked respondents which color palette they prefer the most. On this, 40.72% chose warm colors like red, orange, and yellow. In contrast, 21.51% prefer cool colors like blue and green. Meanwhile, 10.84% chose dark and light colors (black and white). In addition, 6.64% chose ‘pastel colors’, 6.46% chose ‘neon colors’, and 4.64% chose metallic colors. However, 8.56% do not have a preferred color palette.

The survey then asks how important it is for respondents to be in a colorful space or environment. The majority (42.17%) say ‘extremely important’ while 22.05% say ‘important’, and 18.58% are ‘neutral’. Only 4.92% say ‘not important’.

Color Associations With the Color Red

Additionally, the survey asks what feelings do respondents associate with the color red. Most respondents (40.07%) said ‘passion’ while 14.65% say ‘love’ and 13.28% see ‘danger’. Likewise, 11.05% say ‘anger’, 6.96% think of blood, 3.77% say ‘violence’ and 3% say ‘power’.

Following after, the survey asks respondents what feelings they associate with the color blue. All of 32.84% say ‘serenity’ while 22.75% say ‘freedom’. Meanwhile, 6.72% see cold and 6.35% see water. Likewise, 4.13% say ‘sadness’ and 3.99% say ‘negativity’. Lastly, 3.52% think of Summer.

Next, the survey asks what feelings respondents associate with the color white. At least 49.81% say ‘peace’ and 8.35% say ‘life’. Meanwhile, 7.94% think of hospitals, and 7.68% think of angels. Moreover, 7.31% think it is a boring color while 3.09% think of snow, and 2.95% see white as a flavorless color. Lastly, 2.38% associate the color white with kindness.

The survey also asks what feelings the color black makes them feel. The majority (43.62%) say ‘darkness’ while 10.87% say ‘fear’. Also, 9.45% say ‘loneliness’ while 5.64% think of the night. Moreover, 5.47% say ‘sophistication’, 5.15% say ‘elegance’, 4.94% say ‘strength’, and 4.50% think of silence. Lastly, 3.25% say the color black is ‘evil’.

Most Respondents Associate Purple Color With Dignity

Next, the colors and emotions survey asks respondents what they associate with the color purple. The majority (39.18%) say ‘dignity’ while 13.03% say ‘nobility’, and 11.12% think of grapes. Similarly, 8.52% see ‘diversity’ whereas, 6.50% say purple is a mysterious color. Lastly, 5.15% say it is a color that denoted anti-aging and 4.60% say it is the color of creativity.

To add on, the survey asks respondents what they associate with the color pink. Most (43.49%) say ‘love’, 16.28% say ‘romance’ 12.76% say ‘girls’. Meanwhile, 6.55% instantly think of cotton candy. Also, 4.29% see ‘compassion’, 3.15% see ‘femininity’ and 2.99% think of cherry blossoms. Lastly, 2.97% think of princesses.

Following after, the survey asks respondents what they associate with the color yellow. Over 36.65% associate yellow with ‘youth’ while 16.55% instantly think of bananas. Likewise, 11.03% see ‘happiness’, 9.57% think of Spring, 4.29% see ‘sickness’, and 4.15% think of a yellow card. Lastly, 4.10% chose ‘sunflower’. 

Then, the survey asks respondents what they associate with the color green. The majority (40.95%) say ‘forest’, 14.45% say ‘grass’, 10.65% say ‘relaxation’, and 6.09% say ‘neutrality’. Moreover, 5.97% say ‘eco-friendliness’, 4.67% think of ‘chlorophyll’, and 4.56% see ‘freshness’.

To conclude, the survey asks whether owning items in gold and silver color gives a feeling of ‘higher importance’. More than half of respondents (56.15%) say ‘yes’ while 11.24% say ‘no’. The remaining 19.23% say ‘a little bit’.
