In recent years, a name that has constantly been under the spotlight is Elon Musk. Known for his great contributions to technology, he has gone from putting rockets into space to building electric vehicles (EVs). Presently, he’s working to improve neurotechnology. In detail, Musk’s recent project ‘Neuralink’, involves implanting chips into the human brain. This should link the brain directly and allow access to computers.

However, the project involves potentially unsafe human trials. This development has made headlines and the public have their opinions about it. Thus, Real Research — the online survey app, launched a survey seeking public opinion on Neuralink.

Highlights

  • 73.65% have heard of Neuralink seeking to launch human trials involving brain chips
  • 52.13% feel the latest Neuralink project is ‘horrible and inhumane’
  • 73.65% say the Neuralink brain chip experiment will work with humans

First, the survey asked respondents if they are aware Elon Musk co-founded the neurotechnology startup ‘Neuralink’. To this, 76.34% say ‘yes’ while 23.66% are not aware.

Following after, the survey asks respondents if they know about Neuralink soon commencing human trials that involve brain chips inserted into humans. On this, 73.65% say ‘yes’, while 26.35% have not heard of the news.

Further, the survey asked what respondents’ thoughts are about inserting brain chips into humans. The majority (52.13%) said that it is ‘horrible and inhumane’ while 14.95% say ‘pharmaceuticals conduct trials for new drugs, thus inevitable’.

Moreover, 12.05% say ‘finally, something you see only in movies is happening’. Lastly, 4.46% say ‘because he is Elon Musk, he can plan such human trials without hesitation.

Respondents’ Opinions on Elon Musk’s Remarks

Next, the survey asks respondents’ opinions about a brain chip implant enabling someone with paralysis to use a smartphone faster than someone using thumbs.

On this, 63.62% have ‘positive’ opinions. Meanwhile, 17.09% have negative opinions and 19.28% are not interested.

Since the said Neuralink chip worked on animals, the survey asked if respondents believe it will work on humans as well. The majority (73.65%) said ‘yes’, while 26.36% said ‘no’.

Respondents Participating in the Human Trials

Moving ahead, the survey on inserting brain chips into humans asked respondents what they would choose if given the chance to participate in the human trials for implanting brain chips. Here, 56.73% said they ‘absolutely’ would. In contrast, 43.27% said they would ‘never’.

To conclude, the survey asks if respondents are in favor of or against inserting brain chips into humans. More than half (50.10%) were in favor as it gives a chance for patients who cannot overcome an illness or disability.

Moreover, 22.32% were against Elon Musk’s brain chips, as they believe ‘connecting humans to computers will eventually turn them into robots’. Lastly, 27.58% were neutral ‘if it is used only for absolutely necessary circumstances.’
