The pandemic brought losses to many industries and sectors of the economy. In specific, the Tourism and Hospitality sector suffered extensively. Due to the countless travel restrictions, preventative measures, and quarantine rules, many countries surviving on tourism, suffered the most.

However, it was not only the countries but those employed in these sectors that suffered as well. Thus, Real Research launched a survey about the covid-19 impact on tourism. Specifically, the survey seeks to find out how covid affected the tourism industry. Here are the results.

Many Are ‘Very Positive’ Towards the Tourism Industry Recovering

The survey starts by questioning if respondents are aware that prior to covid-19, jobs in travel and tourism accounted for 10% of global GDP. The majority (64.75%) said ‘yes’, while 35.25% said ‘no’.

Further, the survey asks if respondents are positive that the tourism industry will recover amid the discovery of new variants. All 34.33% are ‘very positive’, 26.16% are ‘somewhat positive’, and 14.39% are ‘negative’.

Next, the survey asks respondents about the impact of covid-19 on tourism industry and which country suffered the most from covid. On this, 37.72% feel their country was ‘strongly affected’. Moreover, 24.43% say ‘somewhat affected’ and 27.99% are ‘neutral’.

Following after, the survey asks respondents if borders have fully reopened within their countries of residence. Most respondents (33.52%) said ‘limited open borders (to vaccinated foreign tourists only)’. Meanwhile, 28.12% say ‘fully open’ and 11.50% say ‘still closed’.

Respondents Find Government Protective Measures To Be Satisfactory

Next, the survey asks about respondents’ satisfaction with protective measures imposed by the government for the tourism industry in their country of residence. A majority of 36.42% are ‘extremely satisfied’, 26.07% say ‘satisfied’, and 12.36% say ‘unsatisfied’.

Further on, the survey asks respondents ‘should countries ease travel restrictions for the tourism industry to recover?’. To this, 41.96% voted ‘yes’ while 22.81% say ‘no’.

Following this, the survey asks respondents if the tourism industry can recover from the losses it made since the pandemic. All 30.63% believe ‘most definitely’, 27.15% say ‘definitely’, 30.661% are ‘not sure’, and 11.62% feel it is ‘less likely to recover’.

Majority Expect a Full Rebound of Tourism Industry in 2022

On asking when respondents believe the tourism industry can expect a full rebound in their country of residence. All 35.02% suggest 2022, while 21.63% say 2023, 15.04% say 2024, and 12.42% say ‘any year after 2024’.

Furthermore, the survey questions respondents ‘which industry affected by covid 19?’. The results are 28.54% ‘hotels’, 15.99% ‘restaurants’, 13.12% ‘airlines’, 11.25% ‘resort areas’, 4.50% ‘tour guides’, and 4.09% ‘tourists’.

Moreover, the survey asked what would have caused the greatest financial loss in the tourism industry. The majority (32.33%) said airline restrictions to fly to other countries whereas 21.73% said people being unable to travel globally. Likewise, 10.65% say ‘hotel and restaurants’, 6.49% suggest ‘employees having to stop work’, and 6.03% say ‘local & international curfews and travel restrictions.’

Lastly, the survey asked respondents what steps can be taken to maintain the running of businesses in the tourism industry. Here, the majority (36.58%) suggest ‘collecting health information from tourists (temperature check, etc)’, some 20.24% said ‘regular testing of workers in travel and tourism’.

Adding on, 8.74% suggest ‘hygiene training for staff’, 4.70% said ‘compulsory use of COVID-19 tracing apps’, 2.17% say ‘compulsory use of masks’, and 1.58% said ‘international travel restrictions’.
