Christmas and New Year is all about festivities, holiday, and time spent with friends and family. It is also the season of exchanging gifts between friends and family as a symbol of love and togetherness. Deciding on gifts to buy, however, can be challenging.

Accordingly, Real Research — the online survey app, conducted a survey seeking insightful opinions about what society would deem good gifts for Christmas and New Year. This also includes how much respondents are willing to spend, the best gits for kids and adults, and more. Here are the results.

  • 28.79% are willing to spend up to $50 on gifts for Christmas and New Year.

22.68% Tend To Celebrate Both Christmas and New Year

First off, the survey asked respondents which holiday they celebrate. In response, 29.59% say New Year while 21.29% say ‘Christmas’. Meanwhile, 22.68% say ‘Both; while 26.43% do not celebrate either.

Next, the survey went on to ask whether respondents prefer giving gifts or receiving them. On this, 22.79% like ‘receiving gifts’, 22.45% prefer giving gifts, and 54.75% like both.

Then the survey asked what respondents receive the most over the past years. Here, 25.45% say ‘sweets’, 12.29% say ‘jewelry or accessories, and 8.06% say ‘phone calls to say hello’. Lastly, 7.56% say ‘perfume/cosmetics’, 4.97% say ‘books’, and 4.61% say ‘New Year/ Christmas stuff’.

The Majority Are Willing To Spend $50 on Gifts

Next, the survey asks how much respondents are willing to spend on gifts for Christmas and New Year. On this, most (28.79%) say ‘up to $50’. Likewise, 18.81% say ‘from $51 to $100’ and 10.71% say ‘from $101 to $150’. Further, 7.10% say ‘more than $201’ and 6.79% say ‘from $151 to $200.’ Lastly, 27.80% are not planning to buy gifts for Christmas and New Year.

Further on, the survey asked what respondents believe are the best Christmas gifts for kids. To this, the majority (21.63%) say ‘Toy’, 15.70% say ‘Lego’, and 12.29% say ‘clothes/shoes’. Also, 11.79% say ‘books’ and 7.35% suggest ‘tech gadgets/accessory’.

Following up, the survey asks what gifts would be best for an adult. The majority (27.27%) suggest ‘money’ while 15.95%  say ‘gadgets and electronics’. Likewise, 9.54% say ‘cosmetics/perfumes’, 6.18% say ‘home and kitchen appliances’, 5.81% say ‘gift vouchers/coupons’, and 2.47% suggest ‘household goods’.

Respondents Reveal Their View on ‘Unsuitable’ Gifts

The survey proceeds to ask respondents what they feel are unsuitable products to give as gifts. To this, the majority (17.73%) say ‘perfume/deodorants’, 19.17% say ‘underwear’, and 13.99% say ‘money’. Adding on, 8.19% say ‘Christmas or New Year’s souvenirs’, 4.77% say ‘clothes’, and 4.72% say ‘sweets’.

When asked where respondents usually buy gifts for Christmas and New Year, the majority (18.83%) say ‘online marketplaces like Amazon or eBay’. Likewise, 18.15% say ‘department store’, 9.12% say ‘online retailers,’ 8.42% say ‘brand’s online stores’. However, 14.62% are ‘not planning to buy gifts for Christmas and New Year.’

Finally, the survey asked respondents ‘why exchange gifts on Christmas’ and why it is important? To this, the majority (24.36%) say ‘family tradition’, 23.14% say to ‘make loved ones happy’, and 12.36% say it ‘confirms friendship and affection for each other.’ Moreover, 4.38% believe it is a ‘personal ritual’ whereas 3.58% say to satisfy themselves. However, 15.08% feel that it is not important for them to exchange gifts for Christmas or New Year.
