Last December, the world’s largest onion exporter, India, imposed an export ban on the vegetable, extending until March 30. In the UAE, the price of onion per kilogram shot up from AED 3, eventually to AED 6, to AED 9, and presently at AED 6.
Crying over onions!
The collapse of the prices of onions left frequent users of the vegetable without much choice. Being forced to pay the increased price, some resorted to various measures and decided to stop eating onions altogether. Others turned to substitutes such as garlic and leeks.
