Meta, the parent company of Facebook has released a new text-based social network app, codenamed “Threads” to challenge Twitter’s dominance in social media. During pre-release Threads was rumored to release as “Project 92.”

The app, based on Instagram, will integrate with the decentralized social media protocol ActivityPub, allowing users to migrate their accounts and followers to other ActivityPub-supported apps.

Meta’s chief product officer shared a preview of the app with employees, revealing its reliance on Instagram’s account system. Meta has secured commitments from celebrities and is in talks with influential figures. Development began in January 2023, and the app is expected to be released soon.

As Meta enters the social media competition, particularly amid Twitter’s recent controversies, the impact of Twitter’s rival app remains to be seen. Real Research, an online survey app, conducted a survey on Meta’s plans to create Twitter rival to gauge public opinion on Meta’s Twitter competitor app.

Highlights:

  • 39.46% would  somewhat likely use the Twitter-like platform, Project 92.
  • Nearly half (44.16%) believe Project 92 could offer a superior user experience compared to Twitter.
  • 46.67% believe there would be increased innovation in the social media space as a result of Project 92.

According to the survey of Meta’s Twitter competitor, we found that 36% were aware of Meta’s Twitter competitor, 33% were well aware, and 31% were unaware.

When asked about their inclination to use Meta’s new app, respondents provided the following responses: 39% expressed a somewhat likely likelihood, 35% expressed a high likelihood, 21% remained unsure, 3% expressed a somewhat unlikely likelihood, and 2% expressed a high unlikelihood.

Project 92 contains capabilities comparable to Twitter, according to photos leaked from an internal Meta meeting. Like and reshare buttons, user verification indicators, and message options are among the significant aspects. Meta’s stolen photographs also show five tabs on the interface, which might feature items like home/search, create, likes, and profile.

Some users anticipate that it would have a better user experience than Twitter. We asked our respondents what they thought about this. Nearly half of the respondents (44%) agreed, while a notable 38% remained uncertain, and 18% disagreed.

Need for Twitter Competitor?

When asked about the need for a new Twitter competitor, the survey results indicate that 52% of the respondents agreed, 31% were unsure, and 17% disagreed. This suggests that a majority of the respondents see value in having an alternative to Twitter, indicating a perceived need for a new competitor in the social media landscape.

The survey data showed that most (27%) called for better moderation tools followed by another 27% who demanded more privacy options, 20% said improved search, 12% said new ways to interact, and 9% said more diverse user base.
