Travel for recreation, work, or as a daily ritual is common in most day-to-day experiences. It is typical in our society for people to travel daily via bus, car, train or cycle, or commute on foot even. It can evoke mixed emotions, both physically and mentally. What’s more, times during travel or commute tend to be boring, exhausting, or uneventful. It matters then how well you utilize time commuting on your journey, whether for work or leisure.

Thus, Real Research, an online survey app, launched a survey on utilizing time while commuting. See how respondents spend their respective journeys and how they utilize time, specifically during a long commute, and its drawbacks.

Highlights:

  • 37.22% replied that 30 minutes or less is their average daily commute time

Respondents on the Average Daily Commute Time

The survey on ‘utilizing time while commuting’ asks respondents their average daily commute time. In response, 37.22% replied less than or up to 30 minutes, 26.96% commute for 1 to 2 hours, and 13.19% travel for 2 to 3 hours daily. Meanwhile, 11.19% replied for more than 4 hours, and 10.67% commuted for 3 to 4 hours.

Then, the survey asks respondents about their preferred mode of travel. 35.73% say they travel by bus and 18.31% by car. While 14.25% commute via train/metro, 10% of respondents use bikes for travel.

Next, the ‘utilizing time while commuting survey’ asks where respondents commute to daily. 43.54% said work, 12.74% commute to school/college, and 10.32% travel daily for the gym, school, work, grocery store, etc.

Views on Utilizing Time While Commuting

Accordingly, the survey asks, ‘how do you utilize your commuting time?’ All 31.27% replied sleep, 13.51% listen to music, and 9.25% said they stare out the window. Meanwhile, 8.69% catch up on work. Others prefer watching TV shows and movies (6.67%), reading a book (6.36%), and playing games on their phone (5.27%).

Furthermore, the survey asks ‘how do you feel when commuting in the morning?’ Most (32%) felt sleepy, and a further 9.89% felt exhausted. On the other hand, 8.67% feel refreshed commuting in the morning, and 6.31% feel excited. However, 6.35% feel stressed.

Likewise, the ‘utilizing time while commuting’ survey asks, ‘how do you feel when commuting back from somewhere?’ Most (33.27%) replied sleepy, and 4.86% said they were exhausted. Meanwhile, 11.69% usually feel happy commuting back, and 10.17% feel refreshed.

Respondents’ Opinions on the Biggest Drawback of Long Commutes

Accordingly, the survey asks respondents, ‘what is the biggest drawback of long commutes?’ Most respondents (45.76%) said ‘loss of time,’ and 12.48% think it’s ‘inability to manage time.’ Agreeably, 12.31% experience ‘imbalance in life.’ Meanwhile, 10.46% feel ‘mental and physical impacts on health,’ and 9.17% face an ‘inability to prioritize other things.’ Lastly, 9% feel ‘stuck in a vicious cycle of monotonous routine.’

Finally, the survey on ‘utilizing time while commuting’ asked respondents if they prefer shorter or longer commute durations. A majority of 52.96% replied they like shorter commute durations, whereas 20.34% prefer longer commute durations.
