Moving in with your partner might be more complex than you think. Uttarakhand state in India may require couples to inform authorities and comply with the law before moving in together. 

In most parts of India and many other countries in the world, unmarried couples living together are still frowned upon. These relationships are usually referred to as “live-in.”

The proposal requires partners to submit a live-in relationship statement to the registrar, who will conduct a summary inquiry within 30 days. The partners might be asked to provide “additional information” if necessary during the investigation. Moreover, the registrar will forward the statements to the local authorities and parents if either partner is under 21.

If the request gets approved, the couple will be issued a certificate. If not, partners will be informed of the reasons for denial. Reasons behind the refusal include whether one of the partners is married, a minor, or if consent to the relationship wasn’t genuine and obtained through coercion or fraud.

Failure to comply with the new regulation could lead to up to three months in prison, a fine of up to 10,000 rupees ($120), or both. If couples submit false statements or withhold information about themselves, it could result in a three-month prison sentence, a fine of up to 25,000 rupees ($300), or both.
