Whether around friends, family, or colleagues, people drink for multiple reasons, usually in accompaniment of others. However, times are changing, and given circumstances like the prevailing pandemic, many are learning to spend time by themselves. As such, this isolation has proven to be one of the ideal reasons people drink alone now.

Accordingly, Real Research has launched an online survey application that asks participants whether they drink alone at home, the reasons they do so, and how much they drink when alone at home, among other questions. Here are the results.

  • 68.16% of the respondents drink alone at home.
  • 40.34% ‘drink heavily’ when drinking alone at home.
  • 50.65% say they will continue to drink alone even after the pandemic.

The Majority of the Respondents Drink Alone at Home

To start off, the survey asked respondents if they ever drink alone at home. To which, 68.16% say ‘yes and 31.84% say ‘no’. Moreover, respondents were asked how often they drink alone at home. In reply, 49.10% say ‘more than once a month’, 34.47% say ‘20 or more’ a month, and 9.22% say ‘more than 5 times per month’. Lastly, 7.21% say ‘more than 10 times per month’.

Furthermore, the survey also asked what the respondents’ favorite drink is when they drink alone at home. Accordingly, the responses were 44.43% for Wine, 21.04% for Beer, 6.07% for Whiskey, 6% for Soju, and 4.90% for Rum. Adding to this, 4.04% chose Vodka, 3.69% chose Gin, 3% chose Cocktails, and 2.62% chose Sake.

40.34% Are ‘Heavy Drinkers’ When Drinking Alone at Home

Next, the survey on drinking alone at home went on to ask how much they drink when alone at home. In reply, 40.34% say they drink ‘heavily’ and 26.50% say they drink moderately. Likewise, 19.33% say they prefer to not get drunk, and 13.83% say they drink until they get ‘tipsy’.

Following this, the survey asked what respondents usually eat when they drink alone at home. On this, 37.28% say they eat meat like steak, etc., whereas 12.54% say ‘fried fritter’ and 12.06% say fruits. Adding on, 10.75% say ‘chips/sweets’, 10.60% say they ‘don’t eat while drinking’, 9.61% say ‘soup/stew’, and 7.16% say cheese.

Additionally, the survey asked what respondents usually do while they drink alone at home. Here, 31.41% say they talk on the phone with friends, family, or lovers, whereas 24.52% say they watch a movie, TV Series, or Netflix. Moreover, 17.41% say they watch YouTube videos, 13.01% say they play games, and 12.49% say they ‘read a book’.

46.02% Can Control Their Limit When They Drink Alone at Home

Next, the survey asked ‘Why do you drink alone at home?’, to which, 48.02% say they can control their limit. Likewise, 11.32% can choose drinks that suit their taste and 9.24% say they can enjoy their pastime.

Additionally, 9.10% say they drink lightly at home in comparison to drinking heavily in bars. Then, 8.93% drink alone at home due to the pandemic, whereas 7.84% feel comfortable and not self-conscious when at home. Lastly, 6.77% say they ‘have no one else to drink with’.

In conclusion, the survey asked respondents whether they would continue to drink alone at home even after the coronavirus pandemic ends. Here, almost half of the respondents (50.65%) say they will continue to drink alone. IN contrast, 15.92% say they will drink alone ‘occasionally’.

More so, 13.12% say they will drink alone, same as now, 11.56% say ‘no, I would drink with other people’, and 8.76% say they will ‘definitely drink alone less’.
