Greece is one of the first Orthodox Christian countries to approve a bill allowing same-sex civil marriage. Many believed the approval was a victory for supporters of LGBTQ rights. The law gives same-sex couples the right to wed and adopt children.
In a 300-seat parliament, 176 lawmakers approved the bill. Reports revealed that while some members of the center-right New Democratic Party abstained or voted against the bill, the bill gained enough support from the leftist opposition.
Greece’s former prime minister expressed his disapproval, saying, “Of course, I will vote against it. The marriage of same-sex couples is not a human right.” One member of the right parties, Elliniki Lysi, called the bill “anti-Christan” and added that it hurts national interests.
Ermina Papadima, a member of the Greek Transgender Support Association, stated her happiness by saying that with this legislation, Greece is “one of the most progressive countries.” Additionally, the head of the same-sex parent group Rainbow Families believes this is a “historic moment.”
