“Everything that you suffer from as an adult is because of your parents.”

Have you heard or read this sentence before? Many psychologists link parents’ behaviors and actions directly to how the person acts when they are children and when they grow up. One of the many well-known and often discussed effects are “mommy issues” and “daddy issues.”

Mommy Issues

Defined as psychological challenges coming from strained relationships with mothers or mother figures during the formative years, mommy issues could be experienced by both men and women. The mother-child relationship could have a direct impact on your adult relationships, good or bad.

Symptoms of Having Mommy Issues

There are many signs of having mommy issues, but this isn’t a concrete sit-in-stone list, as the entire concept isn’t studied well.

Some of these symptoms are the inability to experience deep connections, clinginess, being unaffectionate, over-criticizing, and dependency. However, men and women show different signs, as mommy issues in women generally manifest as low self-esteem, difficulty trusting others, and fearing criticism. Men, on the other hand, show signs of being disrespectful towards women, feeling insecure and suspicious, and cheating on partners.

Daddy Issues

Daddy issues can stem from different types of father behaviors; for example, overindulging, emotionally unavailable, violent, abusive, and controlling fathers can lead to having daddy issues.

Symptoms of having daddy issues can differ from man to woman, but broadly, the signs could be being possessive and clingy, craving an overabundance of assurance, and being afraid of being alone.
