The BBC reported that a lot of deepfakes of Donald Trump, the former President of the United States of America, posing with African Americans have been circulating on social media platforms in recent times. This comes when the presidential election in the U.S. is just around the corner.
The co-founder of Black Voters Matter, a group that encourages black people to vote, said the manipulated images were pushing a “strategic narrative” designed to show Mr. Trump as popular in the black community.
Radio show host Mark Kaye shared an AI-generated image of Trump smiling with his arms around black women. Kaye shared this image on his Facebook handle, which has more than a million followers.
Although, at a glance, the images look perfect, with closer inspection, the people’s skin looked shinier than usual, and there were missing fingers on people’s hands.
Kaye stated, “I’m not a photojournalist, I’m not out there taking pictures of what’s really happening. I’m a storyteller.”
Furthermore, Kaye stated that if anybody was voting one way or another because of one photo they see on a Facebook page, that’s a problem with that person, not with the post itself.
