Immigration Minister Marc Miller stated that Canada will set a cap on temporary residents entering the country. This limit, which is to be set by September, will apply to international students as well as foreign workers and asylum claimants.

This new decree comes in an endeavor to reduce the 6.2% of temporary residents in the population to 5% over the next three years. Miller said that the move is to ensure “sustainable” growth in the number of temporary residents coming into Canada.

According to figures from the national data collection agency Statistics Canada, the minister said there are a total of 2.5 million temporary residents in Canada. This figure is up from nearly one million in 2021.

“To be clear, these are important global commitments to Canadians. At the same time, there should be an honest conversation about what the rise of international migration means for Canada as we plan ahead,” stated Miller.

However, there were two categories of the labor force that were exempted from the above. Miller stated that workers in the construction sector and healthcare sector would be exempted from the above rule, as Canada was facing shortages in those two sectors.
