As our economy continues to grow, we tend to see new innovations emerge. Much like the gig economy, sharing economy is also seeing massive interest and adoption. The rise in these types of new economies is likely thanks to the presence of online platforms.

Sharing economy can be seen in many companies such as Airbnb and Uber. Likewise, Bird is a similar company that offers a sharing economy model with its electric scooter sharing business. Specifically, the online survey application — Real Research surveyed its users to find out Perception on Sharing Economy. Here are the results.

The Majority Has Heard of Sharing Economy

To start, 59.79% of the respondents are already aware of sharing economy. Next, we asked which sharing service the respondents have used the most so far. On this, the majority (21.59%) chose car-sharing services.

Likewise, ride-sharing services (11.36%) came next. Following after are apartment/house renting (5.92%), crypto exchange (4.56%), sharing workspace (3.94%), sharing kitchen (2.59%), personal mobility (2.76%), and neighborhood marketplace (1.26%).

Next, we asked the respondents what they think are the biggest disadvantage and advantage of sharing economy. For advantages, the highest votes (25.58%) went to the fact that there is an increase in value for shared items and services.

Accordingly, 8.33% said it monetizes underused resources, 7.66% say it is convenient and easy, 6.94% say it allows people to experience unique services at affordable prices, and 4.20% say it is economical as it is eco-friendly and saves resources.  As for the disadvantages, 28.93% say the quality of the goods or services is not guaranteed. Following after, 10.54% say it could be dangerous as it involves trusting strangers. Lastly, 7.18% say solutions are not guaranteed with poor services and 4.90% say there could be an infringement on the scope of services.

23.87% Heard of Bird From Friends or Acquaintances

Almost half (49.03%) of the respondents are aware of the electric scooter sharing brand Bird. Next, we asked how they came to discover the brand. On this, 23.87% say it was recommended by friends. Likewise, 5.83% said it is more beneficial than public transport. More so, 3.99% said they tried it out of curiosity or interest, 2.52% said they were in search of a new hobby, 3.42% said after watching an ad, and 2.06% said to participate in an event. To add on, the majority (24.71%), are extremely satisfied with the service.

The next question asked for the respondents’ main reason for using Bird. The majority (24.96%), said they used it for fun. Meanwhile, 6.58% use Bird for their daily commute, 4.62% use it to access places where other public transport is unavailable, and 3.28% said to avoid crowds on public transport. In addition, 2.46% say it’s easy to pick their own route, 2.22% said there is no rush, and 0.40% said greater accessibility.

In turn, we asked about their impression of Bird. Here, 20.56% chose ‘Convenient’, 13.83% chose ‘Fun’, 5.67% chose ‘Eco-friendly’, and 3.87% chose ‘economical’. Specifically, 2.44% said ‘Trendy’, 2.43% said ‘Unsafe’, 2.31% said ‘Comfortable, and 0.447% said ‘Quick’.

Up next came the two contrasting questions — advantages of Bird electric scooter and disadvantages of Bird electric scooter. For advantages, 24.17% said it is operated in over 100 cities worldwide and 6.43% said the company is trustworthy as they also manufacture electric bikes. Next, 4.93% said automatic payment with card registration, 4.38% the presence of the Bird mobile app, and 2.84% said users can park at designated parking lots.

On the other hand, the top disadvantage is the additional fee for parking outside of operational zones (22.29%). Accordingly, 7.01% say many areas are not covered by the service, 6.95% say malfunctions are an issue, 3.29% say pick up fee, and 3.83% say the battery dies quickly.

Respondents Say Drunk Riding Is Bird’s Biggest Problem

When asked what the biggest possible danger was in ride-sharing by Bird 27.26% chose drunk riding. Going forth, 6.32% chose absence of protective gear, 5.23% said illegal parking and abandoned scooters. Meanwhile, 3.68% said disruption in the streets, and 4.02% said speeding.

The next question asked what measures must be taken to implement Bird as a primary option for transportation. On this, 27.41% said to reinforce the relevant law, 8.05% said there must be proper systems in place to prevent accidents.

More so, 4.81% said to implement safety education to raise awareness, 3.32% chose to conduct nationwide campaigns. Lastly, 3.20% said to expand parking and service areas, and 1.52% said to control the rides strictly.  

Respondents chose the ride-sharing brand they’d like to use besides Bird. The first on the list is KICKGOING (21.74%), Swing (8.22%), Alpaca (4.75%), DART (4.05%), Lime (3.24%), Beam (2.46%), and Bolt (2.50%).

Finally, the last question asked if the respondents would rather use a ride-sharing service or buy an electric scooter of their own. On this, 32.93% said indeed they would as buying one is expensive. 8.09% said yes as they wouldn’t have to maintain it. On the contrary, 5.90% said no as they use the product all the time. Similarly, 3.84% said no as immediate repairs are difficult. The rest are unsure.
