Recreational activities, also known as leisure activities, are those that individuals engage in during their free time. These activities can include outdoor activities such as jogging, fishing, hunting, camping, and rock climbing, among others.

However, with the rise of urbanization and advancements in technology, people in industrialized nations are increasingly disconnected from nature. This disconnection can contribute to unsustainable behaviors, while a connection to nature can promote a more environmentally friendly culture.

Hence, Real Research, an online survey app, launched a survey on outdoor recreational activities to gather public opinions on this subject.

  • 47.88% always engage in outdoor recreational activities
  • 32.36% spend less than 30 minutes per week on outdoor recreational activities
  • 21.77% report outdoor recreation activities as a mental health booster

According to our report findings, the first survey shows how often respondents engage in any outdoor recreation activity. 47.88% of respondents report as always, 19.16% often, 22.47% sometimes, 7.17% rarely, and 3.32% none.

Out of several outdoor recreational activities, the poll reveals that 12.69% enjoy jogging, 9.51% enjoy hiking, 8.96% enjoy picnicking, 4.97% enjoy hunting, and 7.32% enjoy fishing.

When asked how often respondents engage in outdoor recreational activities, results reveal that (33.24%) daily, (21.61%) weekly, (21.47%) monthly, (13.48%) once every quarter, and (5.79%) annually.

Similarly, when asked how much time per week they spend, 32.26% reported less than 30 minutes, (19.51%) less than an hour, (22.4%) 1 – 2 hours, (12.9%) 2 – 4 hours, and (6.02%) 4 – 6 hours.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Recreational Outdoor Activity

(12.97%) physical abilities, (11.19%) location, (7.19%) difficulty level, (11.45%) interests and passion, (6.82%) gear and equipment, and (9.08%) time constraints.

Besides, the survey inquires about respondents’ preference for participating in outdoor leisure activities, whether alone or with companions.

Results reveal 19.81% prefer to engage in outdoor activities with friends, 19.5% prefer with family, 13.22% prefer with colleagues, 10.72% prefer with pets, and 21.88% prefer alone.

The following poll, “Which, among the following factors motivates you to engage in outdoor recreational activities,” show that 15.55% mainly prefer for their mental well-being and to feel restored, 14.54% to enjoy and spend time in nature, 13.27% to relax and disconnect from reality, 16.15% to exercise and improve their physical health, and 14.61% to spend time with family.

Physical Fitness Is the Most Important Factor

There are also sets of skills to consider before engaging in outdoor recreational activities. 21.97% reported physical fitness as the most demanding skill set. Followed by (16.34%) safety skills, (13.47%) survival skills, (15.48%) environmental awareness, and (17.65%) navigation skills.

What Are the Benefits of Outdoor Activities for Adults?

According to the poll, 15.08% of respondents stated that outdoor recreational activities have a positive impact on physical health, 21.77% said that it provides mental health benefits, 12.76% said that it helps in personal growth and development, 16.53% said it helps create positive memories and fosters a connection with nature, and 18.45% said that it improves problem-solving skills and creativity.

What Are the Benefits of Outdoor Activities for Children?

By the same token, the poll results indicate that 11.8% believe that outdoor activities help create positive memories and foster a connection with nature, 10.67% believe it helps improve cognitive abilities, 9.01% believe it enhances confidence and independence through experiencing successes and failures, and 9.87% claim it helps develop essential physical abilities.
