A Survey on the Ban on Russian Athletes from Participating in the Paris Olympics

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron to continue the ban on Russian Athletes for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics. This happened over a telephone call according to an update by Zelensky on the social media messenger Telegram.

Ever since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the international athletic committee has been quick to ban both Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in international athletic events. This has resulted in both nationalities being unable to participate in all kinds of international sports such as racing, tennis, football, and the Olympics.

Several notable issues have been related to the ban of Russian and Belarusian athletes from sporting events. Both nationalities could only compete in the F1 under the ‘FIA flag,’ Tennis players cannot play under their flags and are banned from playing at Wimbledon in 2022, and Russian football teams are banned from UEFA and FIFA competitions.

While Russians and Belarusians are prohibited from participating in the aforementioned international sports, Olympic and sports officials from around the world held conference calls in the third week of January to discuss ways to help Russian athletes and teams qualify for events at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

In light of these conference calls, Ukrainian representatives vehemently opposed the notion. The President of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine (NOCU) held an online call with International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach and urged him not to lift the ban on athletes from Russia competing at the upcoming Olympics. Several other National Olympic Committees (NOCs) leaders also participated in the call and were asked to support Ukraine in blocking Russian and Belarusian athletes from the 2024 Paris Olympics.
