Oscars 2021 – Predictions vs Final Results

The 93rd Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, looked different this year. For instance, the red carpet was fenced for limited access and the after-parties were mostly canceled. It is indeed a much-anticipated event as it was delayed because of the pandemic. Now, the nominees and winners for the 2021 Academy Awards have finally been announced. Thus, the event was truly a sight for sore eyes. It was truly quite the vision to finally see the winners of the 2021 Academy Awards.

Oscar Predictions 2021

There was already much buzz amongst Oscar fans about the event. They are eagerly waiting to see their favorite stars walk on the red carpet before the official ceremony. While the film industry did struggle to gather crowds at the cinemas, they found a way to reach their audience through online streaming services instead. This helped keep the industry afloat during hard times.

In this recent Real Research online survey application, we found out the public opinion about the nominees of the upcoming 2021 Oscars. In particular, we asked the respondents, who will win the Academy Awards? Which movie will win Best Picture? Which is the most interesting category?

Highlights

• The majority of the respondents are excited about the 2021 Academy Awards.
• Chloé Zhao, Best Director, made history as the first woman of color to win an Oscar.
• Yuh-Jung Youn is the first Korean woman to win Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars.

From a total of 200,000 survey participants, the majority (74.40%) are aware of the Academy Awards, while only 25.60% are not aware of the Oscars. This event is happening on exactly April 26th this year in which respondents were asked if they usually watch the Award show. 42.43% of them answered that they always watch it, 37.91% watch it sometimes, and 19.66% said they never watched it.

As an audience, they were also asked how excited they were to watch this years’ Academy Awards. 34.97% of them are ‘very excited’, 24.05% are ‘excited, 22.38% are ‘neutral’, 8.93% are ‘not excited’, and 9.67% are ‘not excited at all’.

Before we go into detail at the Oscar Predictions 2021, we first asked which category is their favorite. Above all, the respondents chose the Best Actor/Actresses (39.69%) category. the second goes to the Best Picture category (26.95%), and the third was Best in Cinematography (12.66%). After that, the Best in Screenplay (4.33%), Best Director or Producer (2.63%), Best in Costume Design, Make-up, and Styling (1.39%), Best in Sound Effects and Visual Effects (0.68%), Best Original Score and Song (0.72%), others (2.47%), and the rest (8.49%) do not watch the prestigious awards for the film industry.

Oscars’ Best Picture 2021

The Father (32.25%)

Film experts say Anthony Hopkins’s shattering lead performance as an old man suffering from dementia got a lot of attention. However, some critics draw attention to Florian Zeller’s clever insidious direction, saying that this is what truly gets at the cruel injustice of mental deterioration.

Judas and the Black Messiah (21.21%)

Daniel Kaluuya’s nomination was about Hampton which blazes a trail through the center of the film as King uses Hampton’s story to challenge every corrupt American myth.

Mank (13.13%)

Noted as a traditional kind of Oscar contender, an old Hollywood homage, in a very untraditional year. Fincher’s ‘Mank,’ is a black-and-white period drama about ‘Citizen Kane’.

Minari (8.87%)

Critics say that what makes ‘Minari’ the best of the Oscar-nominated films is its small moments that capture rapturous beauty along with aching heartbreak. It’s also tough and frustrating and funny and playful.

Nomadland (5.08%) – (Best Picture Winner)

Chloé Zhao’s fascination and deep affection for the American heartland was portrayed in this film. Her skill at conveying their stories on the big screen will grow sharper as time goes by.

Promising Young Woman (3.32%)

The spellbinding way that this film charges through with its premise, determined to blaze a path through all the nice guys and blind eyes that add up to a culture that preys on women, backed up by Carey Mulligan’s equally dialed-in performance, has critics in awe and thus, earned its place among the year’s best films.

Sound of Metal (3.01%)

One of the accidental benefits of the pandemic year in film was that movies that likely wouldn’t have gotten their due consideration were instead allowed a moment to find an audience. Sound of Metal tells a familiar story of dealing with difficulty, but in a new way.

The Trial of the Chicago 7 (1.53%)

In this film-depleted pandemic year, a major release from an Oscar-winning filmmaker with a big, starry cast tackling a subject matter that felt incredibly relevant at the moment had, if nothing else, the air of a major filmmaking event, which, some critics say, was in short supply.

Best Actress and Best Actor 2021

Above all, from the Academy’s Best Actor nominees, respondents think Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal) with 28.59% will take home the award. However, the official Best Actor award goes to Anthony Hopkins from ‘The Father’ which came in third with 19.72%.

With only a small difference, the crowd-favorite Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), who passed away this year due to cancer, got 26.04% votes from the respondents. Meanwhile, other nominees included Gray Oldman (Mank) with 7.91%, and Steven Yeun (4.88%) who is the lead for the movie Minari.

Meanwhile, Viola Davis (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom) is the 2021 Oscar predictions best actress for 32.93% of the respondents. However, the official winner for this year is Frances McDormand (Nomadland) who actually gained her 3rd time Best Actress for Academy Awards.

Likewise, Andra Day (The United States v. Billie Holiday) got 26.96%, Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman) took 18.10%, and Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman) had 3.29%.

Best Supporting Actor and Actress 2021

Sacha Baron Cohen (The Trial of the Chicago 7) was the chosen Best Supporting Actor from the respondents with 32.01% votes. Meanwhile, Maria Bakalova was the Best Supporting Actress for them as she gained 32.80% favor from the survey participants.

Some fans may be disappointed, but others will be thrilled by this outcome as Daniel Kaluuya from Judas and the Black Messiah (30.30%) took home the Best Supporting Actor award. Also, Yuh-Jung Youn from Minari became the first Korean woman in Oscar history to win the Best Supporting Actress.

Moreover, other Best Supporting Actor nominees votes went respectively, Leslie Odom Jr. from One Night in Miami (16.19%), Paul Raci from Sound of Metal (6.71%), Lakeith Stanfield from Judas and the Black Messiah (2.44%).

Similarly, other Best Supporting Actress nominees were Glenn Close from Hillbilly Elegy (21.41%), Olivia Colman from The Father (17.29%), and Amanda Seyfried from Mank (9.27%).

Best Cinematography and Best Director 2021

Sean Bobbit from Judas and the Black Messiah is the 2021 Best Cinematography favorite with 32.82% votes from the respondents. Next on this list with 24.49% is Erik Messerschmidt (Mank) who is the official winner for this year’s Cinematography category. Furthermore, Dariusz Wolski (News of the World) got 21%, Joshua James Richards (Nomadland) with 12.15%, and Phedon Papamichael for The Trial of the Chicago 7 with 9.54%.

Finally, the Best Director category was won by Chloé Zhao (10.71%) for ‘Nomadland’. This victory made her the first woman of color to win the award, and the second woman ever to win in this category.

The crowd favorite, Thomas Vinterberg, got 33.33% votes from the movie Another Round. Moreover, David Fincher (26.33%) for Mank, Lee Isaac Chung (16.83%) of Minari, and Emerald Fennell who directed Promising Young Woman got 12.81%.
