Tech giant Apple, at its recent annual developers show, announced the integration of ChatGPT into its devices through a partnership with developer OpenAI. This development is part of a new personalized AI system called “Apple Intelligence,” which aims to offer users an easier way to navigate Apple devices.
The announcement marks Apple’s entry into the AI race, previously dominated by competitors like Google and Microsoft. However, Apple’s integration of ChatGPT has also sparked concerns about privacy and security, prompting Real Research, an online survey app, to conduct a survey to gauge public opinion on this bold move.
Key Findings:
- Most people heard about Apple adding ChatGPT to iPhones, but opinions are split. Over 60% are cool with it and almost 40% aren’t.
- 65% have security concerns about their data, but almost everyone (94%) trusts Apple’s promises to keep it safe.
- Only a quarter are more likely to buy Apple products now, while over half are actually less likely.
Is Everyone Down With ChatGPT on iPhones?
The announcement of OpenAI’s integration into Apple devices was heard by almost 70% of the surveyed respondents. But while over 60% supported Apple’s integration of ChatGPT, almost 40% expressed opposition.
Security Worries Echo Musk’s Concerns
The division likely stems from concerns echoed by the owner of Tesla and Twitter/X, Elon Musk. Musk expressed strong criticism of Apple’s partnership with OpenAI, threatening to ban iPhones from his companies due to data security concerns. The survey found that these concerns resonated with the majority (64.58%) of respondents.
Despite these worries, 94.18% expressed varying levels of confidence in Apple’s assurances on data security. Apple emphasizes the security and privacy of its AI integration, highlighting that processing will occur on devices with no data stored in the cloud. However, 5.82% remained unconvinced.
Groundbreaking or Just Playing Catch-Up?
The survey also captured the competitive landscape. With over 66% agreeing with Samsung’s jibe that Apple’s integration of ChatGPT wasn’t groundbreaking, it seems some users perceive Apple’s move as catching up with the AI race rather than groundbreaking innovation. Yet, over 62% believe Apple’s pace of adopting AI technology is sufficient to compete.
Will This Make You Buy an iPhone?
However, the newfound optimism doesn’t necessarily translate to sales. While a quarter of respondents are more likely to purchase Apple products due to Apple’s integration of ChatGPT, a much larger portion (over 56%) expressed a decreased purchase intent. Meanwhile, loyal Apple users (around 9%) and non-Apple users (around 10%) remain unaffected.
