TIME is an American news magazine based in New York City. TIME Magazine’s Person of the year is an annual issue of the magazine that features and profiles a person, group, idea, or object that “for better or for worse… has done the most to influence the events of the year.”

The tradition of selecting a Person of the Year began in 1927, and the title has been awarded to a wide range of individuals and groups, including politicians, activists, scientists, and artists. Some notable past recipients include Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and Pope Francis.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian president, and “the spirit of Ukraine” have been named TIME Magazine’s Person of the Year for 2022 in recognition of their significant contributions towards leading Ukraine to a series of victories in its war against Russia. Zelenskyy and the spirit of Ukraine were likely chosen for this honor due to their impact on the events of the year.

The selection prompted TIME to clarify that the influence may not necessarily be positive in nature; it is the amount of influence the individual or idea had in the particular year.
