FIFA turned down Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s request to deliver a message of world peace before the World Cup final and made waves in the public forum.

Reportedly, Zelensky approached FIFA World Cup organizers, requesting that a video of him addressing fans in the stadium in Qatar before the finale kickoff to share a message of world peace be broadcast, eleven months after Russia began the “special military operation” invading the east European country. While some people have defended his request, others have accused him of politicizing an international sporting event.

While denying permission to convey the peace message, FIFA President Gianni Infantino reacted negatively, calling the message “too political.” Meanwhile, the Ukraine President’s office issued a statement criticizing FIFA’s decision, stating, “We thought FIFA wanted to use its platform for the greater good.”

Contextually, Ukraine has repeatedly relied on major world events such as the G20 summit, the Grammy Awards, the Cannes Film Festival, the US Congress, and the Knesset of Israel, irrespective of their theme, to keep the global spotlight on the Russian invasion.

Contrastingly, this year, the World Football Federation has gone to extreme lengths to keep political messaging out of its flagship tournament in Qatar, the first Middle Eastern country to host the event. During the World Cup, the use of other flags and messages by fans, as well as the wearing of LGBTQ+ supporting rainbow-themed anti-discrimination armbands by athletes, were explicitly banned by FIFA. Furthermore, Russia, the country that hosted the 2018 FIFA World Cup, has been barred by FIFA due to its warfare.
