Studies reveal that music preferences depend on different types of personalities. For instance, extroverts and introverts may find themselves vibing to certain genres of music. In some cases, introverts prefer classical music while extroverts prefer rock ballads. One’s culture and family upbringing could also influence these preferences. In many cases, we tend to understand one’s personality through musical preferences. 

To highlight, psychologists introduced the ‘big five personality models’. This model helps narrow down the types of music lovers. Likewise, personality and music preference go hand-in-hand. Furthermore, psychologists suggest by knowing a person’s music preferences, we can get to know about their personality type.

Accordingly, the Real Research online survey app conducted a survey to know about music preference by personality. The survey focused on the correlation of music preference and personality. Furthermore, it inquired about the psychology of music preference and what respondents think ‘does personality affect music taste’. In addition,  what role does music play in your life?

45.86% Listen to Music for Less Than 1 Hour per Day

The survey conducted on personality and music preference asked respondents if they consider themselves as music lovers. In answer, 90.11% consider themselves to be music lovers. Following this, the survey asked respondents how long do they listen to music on average?

In response, less than 1 hour (45.86%), 1-2 hours (27.89%), 3-4 hours (9.73%), 5-6  hours (4.69%), and more than 7 hours (3.96%). Lastly, 3.71% say they rarely listen to music while 3.77% say they don’t listen to music.

48.34% Prefer Mellow (Ballad, R&B, Soft Rock) Music

Next, respondents reveal their personality best described by the ‘big five personality model’. Accordingly, 31.97% chose extroverts/enthusiastic while 24.85% chose creative/open-minded. In turn, 19.01% chose self-assured/confident while 15.26% consider themselves to be trustworthy/modest, and 8.90% chose dependable/goal-oriented.

In line with the above question about personality and music preference, respondents then mention their general music preference. Accordingly respondents chose Mellow (48.34%), Contemporary (15.05%), Sophisticated (14.50%),  Unpretentious (12.22%), and Intense (9.90%).

Following this, the survey asked about how do respondents prefer to enjoy music. On this, 39.09% say by playing music with instruments, whereas, 26.93% said by listening to music from TV/Radio. Also, 17.40% said listening to music at a concert and 15% said while ‘watching recorded/live performance’.

45.84% Appreciate Melody and Rhythm Most About the Music

Diving deep into personality and music preference, the survey asks respondents if they think personality/mood affects one’s choice of music? The answers are in chronological order below: Most definitely (39.21%), Definitely, (20.90%), Neutral (16.98%), Unsure (13.01%), Rarely (5.28%), and Not at all (4.63%)

Furthermore, the survey asked respondents what do they appreciate most about music? Here, 45.84% say ‘melody and rhythm’, whereas,15.19% say ‘the lyrics’. Likewise, 12.50% say it is the performance of their favorite singer and 7.59% admire the skill of the musician involved.  Keeping in mind the personality and music preference of respondents, the survey asked about the role of music in their life. In reply, 31.38% said it helps to escape from everyday routine. In addition, 18.59% say it helps to reduce stress and 18.01% say the music expresses their feelings. Lastly, 7.98% say to boost creativity and 3.94% said it represents cult
