The World Health Organization (WHO) has already specified that it is unlikely for the Monkeypox situation to escalate into a pandemic. While the virus carries flu-like symptoms similar to COVID-19, it is nowhere to be contagious. Furthermore, with its similarity to smallpox, science has made tons of studies about the illness and how to treat it.

Despite the continuing rise of monkeypox cases, public-health officials and researchers are questioning whether they can continue to control the outbreaks. For this reason, Real Research launched a survey to see the public opinion on Monkeypox.

Highlights:

  • 56.54% reside in a country that allows gatherings despite the covid situation
  • 84.89% have heard of the Monkeypox virus
  • 64.06% consider getting vaccinated against monkeypox if vital

The Rise of Monkeypox

The survey on Monkeypox starts by asking respondents about the current situation of Covid-19 in their country of residence. In response, survey results show that the majority still have cases of covid-19 but are now at milder alert levels.

In detail, 56.54% live in countries that allow them to attend gatherings, and 10.27% don’t follow social distancing restrictions anymore. In other countries of residence, 10.08% consider wearing masks unnecessary, and 9.73% are close to no travel restrictions. Finally, 8.13% no longer require PCR tests and vaccination cards.

While the world is slowly recovering from Covid-19, another threat in the form of a new virus has risen. Accordingly, the survey asks respondents if they have heard about monkeypox. Here, the majority of 84.89% have, and only 15.11% have not heard of the new monkeypox virus.

Is There a Need to Panic?

Compared to Covid-19, the monkeypox outbreak only resulted in a few cases. Accordingly, the survey asks respondents if they think this could lead to another possible lockdown.

Here, 47.88% are confident it won’t since it is curable without the intervention of doctors. Another 15.08% also think there is no need for a lockdown since monkeypox is not as contagious as coronavirus is. Meanwhile, 15.27% expect a lockdown to stop the spread of the monkeypox virus.

Moreover, when asked ‘how dangerous is monkeypox,’ a majority of 47.45% think monkeypox is less alarming. On the other hand, 16.81% consider it more fatal than covid. Meanwhile, 10.78% say it is comparable in scale and consequences to Covid-19, and 24.96% are still unsure.

The Monkeypox Vaccination

The survey also reveals that 64.06% consider vaccination or immunization if it is vital against monkeypox. On the contrary, 12.82% are against it, and 23.12% remain unsure.

Finally, the survey on monkeypox gathers opinions on what respondents think the government should do. In response, 45.12% suggest another lockdown. A further 12.53% propose officials carry out a voluntary-compulsory vaccination.

In addition, 9.71% advise them to coordinate with WHO and other countries, and 9.22% recommend educating the public about the virus.
