The world’s largest active volcano in Hawaii, Mauna Loa, has erupted for the first time in almost four decades.

Mauna Loa is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, with more than 50 recorded eruptions since 1843. Its eruptions are generally non-explosive and produce lava flows extending for many miles.

Despite its frequent eruptions, Mauna Loa has not caused significant loss of life or property damage in modern times, thanks in part to the island’s sparse population and the fact that most of its eruptions are not explosive.

However, Mauna Loa’s volcanic activity can still pose a hazard to people and infrastructure and significantly impact the local environment.

The US Geological Service (USGS) has said the situation could change rapidly.

The volcano’s alert level has also been upgraded from an “advisory” to a “warning” – the highest classification in society. But at the time of writing, the volcano has stopped erupting.

Hence, Real Research launched a survey on the eruption of the world’s largest active volcano in Hawaii after 40 years to gather further information on the eruption of Mauna Loa and awareness and understanding about volcanoes.

Highlights

  • 62.1% are aware of the world’s largest active volcano in Hawaii
  • Nearly 40% (39.87%) say they reside close to a volcano
  • 40.13% point out climate change as the main contributor to volcanic activity

Eruption of the World’s Largest Active Volcano in Hawaii

Mauna Loa, the world’s largest active volcano in Hawaii, had been dormant for nearly four decades until recently. We asked our respondents if they were aware of this.

62.1% say they are well aware of it, 26.08% say to some extent, and 11.82% are unaware.

The next poll gathers data on respondents’ experience of volcanic eruptions. Results reveal that 52.11% reported they had witnessed a volcanic eruption, 32.71% on live forecasts, and 15.18% none.

Do You or Someone Reside in an Area Prone To Volcanic Activity?

Additionally, 39.97% of respondents reported that they reside in an area prone to volcanic activity, 29.84% said they know someone who does, and 30.29% said none.

Volcanic Eruptions Bring Fear

As volcanic eruptions are not very common and occur in only some countries, individuals may be frightened at initial sight. Likewise, the next poll asked the respondents about their feelings when experiencing an eruption.

The results are as follows:

12.6% were scared, 9.35% anxious, 5.68% stunned, 5.27% disoriented, and 5.35 hopeless.

On the other hand, 10.79% were excited, 10% indifferent, 8.76% amused, and 5.8% happy.

Are Volcanic Activities Well-covered?

68.37% state there is enough awareness about volcanoes, 19.4% state little awareness, and 12.23% state that there is no awareness at all.

Furthermore, the following poll asked, among the effects of volcanic activity, which is the most significant? Results reveal that 9.12% say of death to humans, 10.53% say secondary effects, 7.81% say climate change, 7.22% say air pollution, and 6.16% say the loss of habitat.

Likewise, 40.13% say that climate change is a common factor for volcanic eruptions, 39.25% say somewhat of a contributor, and 20.62% say otherwise.

What Measures Should Governments Follow To Reduce the Aftermath

57.74% report evacuating citizens near areas of potential volcanic threats, 27.93% say device and exercise emergency plans, 8.99% say educate about volcanoes, and 4.6% state notifying about regional hazards.
