The metaverse is a virtual universe that combines social media, online gaming, Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), 3D virtual spaces, digital currencies, and many others that allow users to interact in a virtual world.

As the metaverse grows, it creates online spaces where user interactions are more multidimensional and instead of just viewing digital content, users in the metaverse could immerse themselves in a space where the digital and physical worlds meet.

Over the past few years, metaverse-based industries are also rapidly developing. In line with this, Real Research surveyed to find out if metaverse is a technology that leads the future.

The Term ‘Metaverse’

The word ‘metaverse’ reached new heights as people mention the word in the context of Roblox, Minecraft, Animal Crossing, and AR and VR technologies. But has everyone heard the word ‘metaverse’ before? Or have they ever participated in a metaverse event organized by a company or institution?

Most respondents have heard about the term metaverse and the majority haven’t participated in any, according to a survey conducted by Real Research.

About 54% of participants have heard of the metaverse. And only 46% claimed to have never heard or know what the metaverse is. Despite the growing number of firms getting into the virtual reality industry, only 44% have participated in a metaverse event organized by a company or institution. However, 56% of respondents haven’t attended any metaverse event.

In addition, around 30% have participated in the ‘Decorate your own avatar with items and shop at Gucci Villa’ metaverse event organized by Gucci at the beginning of 2021 in partnership with Zepeto, a South Korean social media app that lets users create a 3D digital character, or avatar, from a photo of themselves. Moreover, 12% of participants attended the ‘Join Valentino’s virtual fashion show’ event on July 22, 2020.

Also, other respondents participated in other virtual events like ‘Test drive Hyundai Sonata N Line,’ ‘Attend the fan sign event of Korean girl group Black Pink,’ and many others. However, almost 39% claimed that there is no metaverse event they want to participate in.

Virtual or Metaverse Platforms

With the growth of virtual platforms, it is not easy to track but, Roblox, Zepeto, Fortnite, Animal Crossing, Mozilla hubs, and CoSpaces are among the most popular virtual platforms today.

Around 25% of people have used the Zepeto platform, followed by 8% of participants who have used Fortnite. Aside from these, nearly 5% have used the Roblox virtual platform. In addition, about 16% have used other virtual platforms. Meanwhile, almost 37% said they have never used metaverse platforms.

Speaking of the biggest strengths of the metaverse, 32% think that it is full of fun and it is interesting. Additionally, nearly 7% believe that the metaverse helps to maintain personal relationships without physical interaction. Also, 5% of respondents said that individuals can create another persona in the virtual world. While 15% said they are different points that they think are the biggest strengths of the metaverse, 34% of the participants stated that they don’t use virtual reality platforms.

Just like any other technology, people believe that the metaverse also has some drawbacks. Among the participants, 27% stressed that more people will try to form relationships only in the virtual world. On top of this, 10% emphasized that personal data can be easily leaked. Besides, 16% noted that they are other reasons that they believe are the biggest metaverse disadvantages. On the other hand, almost 35% replied that they don’t use metaverse.
