Almond Mom” refers to parents who push certain restrictive health and eating habits onto their children. This practice or parenting style in a society tends to have a possible negative impact on children. While parents need to encourage healthy eating habits, excessively restrictive habits can result in unhealthy outcomes in children.

The term was coined after one episode of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills aired, whereby Gigi Hadid, an acclaimed model reports feeling weak, to which her mother, television personality, and former model, Yolanda Hadid, suggests chewing a few almonds. Such behavior is termed “almond mom.”

Almond mom, as a practice, is doing rounds on social media, prompting Real Research, an online survey platform, to conduct a survey on the matter.

In detail, the survey aimed to find out what respondents had to say about this specific type of parenting style.

As a parenting style, Almond mom has gained negative opinions from respondents overall.

To start with, the survey reveals that up to 38% are vaguely aware of the term “Almond Mom.” 34% are unaware of the term, leaving only 28% well aware.

Opinions About the ‘Almond Mom’ Parenting Style

The respondents were first asked what their general opinions were about the term, Almond Mom. 19% say that it is harmful to children’s health and well-being. Meanwhile, others said it highlights the importance of being mindful of eating and health habits (16%), concerning (15%), controversial (12%), normal (10%), and unnecessary (9%). 10% stated other reasons.

This kind of parenting style tends to have a lasting impact on children. Specifically, positive or negative impacts. The respondents were asked what kind of impact this trend is likely to leave on children. 56% say it is likely to leave a negative impact, while 44% feel it will leave a positive impact on children.

Next, the survey asks specifically about the harmful effects of this parenting style. 20% of respondents say that it restricts children’s dietary health and well-being. Whereas 16% said it pressures children to conform to certain standards, and another 15% felt it may push children toward eating disorders.

Others say the parenting style can negatively affect mental health (12%), damage children’s self-esteem (11%), and lead to poor body image (10%). Lastly, 16% said others.

Given the negative impacts, as highlighted above, respondents were asked for their stance on the almond mom trend; 58% oppose the trend, while 42% support it.

Causes of the Almond Mom Parenting Style

What are the causes of the parenting style of the almond mom? The survey reveals several reasons, such as parents need to be perfectionists to prove they are good parents (20%). Moreover, 18% feel misinformation about nutrition and health is a likely cause, whereas 14% say social media is the reason.

Additionally, the responses also say societal and cultural pressure (11%) as a reason, fear of illness (11%), and past trauma and experiences (11%). Lastly, 16% stated other reasons.

Is Almond Mom Prevalent in Certain Socioeconomic Communities?

There is some reason to believe that the almond mom parenting style/trend is more prevalent in certain cultural or socioeconomic groups.

When questioned, 49% believe it is probably, 32% believe it is definitely, 15% believe it is probably not, and 4% believe it is definitely not.

Overall, it is evident through the findings of this survey that respondents have a negative view of the almond mom trend, given that it has lasting, damaging effects such as negative image and self-esteem and poor eating habits, among others.
