The 31st of October is one of the world’s most popular annual events, traditionally known as Halloween. Trick-or-treating, dressing up, carving pumpkins, telling scary stories, and visiting haunted houses– this is how you likely imagine society celebrating Halloween. But the holiday has evolved dramatically over the years with plenty of other ghoulish things to try.

Unsurprisingly, thanks to all the sweets on offer, Halloween has endured as a popular children’s celebration. Even so, it has also become an unmissable date in the calendar for adults.

The spookiest season of the year is just around the corner. To get a pulse of the masses, our team, Real Research, and an online survey app launched a survey to understand various customs of how people celebrate Halloween.

6 in 10 Celebrate Halloween

Our survey gathering public opinion on how to celebrate Halloween shows that all respondents are aware of Halloween, and around 6 in 10 celebrate it. The rest (38.41%) do not celebrate but still acknowledge it.

The survey report further highlights the following:

  • 47.4% of respondents go to Halloween parties
  • 5 in 10 prefer celebrating Halloween with their families
  • More than 50% say Thriller by Michael Jackson is the most Halloween iconic song

Halloween is a day of activities that usually goes with public gatherings, but the recent COVID-19 years took a toll on how people celebrate it. The reports show that up to 53.16% were significantly affected by how they celebrate Halloween. The other half were either slightly affected (24.41%) or unbothered by the pandemic (19.44%).

5 in 10 Prefer Celebrating Halloween With Their Families

And others celebrate Halloween with friends (20.91%), colleagues (8.22%), and their partners (6.4%). Indeed, spending Halloween in other people’s company is much nicer, but some still prefer celebrating it solo, just like 8.52% responded.

This year’s Halloween celebration falls on a Monday, and our survey asked what respondents plan to do. Almost half of them (47.4%) are going to a Halloween party, and a further 13.97% plan to host a party. The trick-or-treating for candy that had become one of Halloween’s most popular activities is the plan of 10.78% of respondents. On the flip side, 15.36% have no plans.

What Is Halloween Without Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’?

Thriller has become a Halloween staple– thanks to Michael Jackson. From the list of iconic Halloween songs given below in the chart, it places first with 51.8% of the vote. Everybody by Backstreet Boys comes next with 14.47%, followed by Zombie by Cranberries (11.2%) and Ray Parker Jr’s Ghostbusters (9.16%).

Should Halloween Costumes Be Spooky?

Not anymore. Back in the day, Halloween costumes were more geared toward spooky themes, evoking ghosts, witches, pumpkins, black cats, and the moon. But as Halloween became more about entertaining and keeping children occupied, the costumes became things children enjoyed.

In this sense, this would include characters from popular TV shows, comics, and movies. Our survey results revealed that Obi-Wan Kenobi (39.07%) would be the most popular Halloween costume theme for 2022. Second is Stranger Things (18.27%), She-Hulk (11.27%), and Bridgerton (9.97%).

All-Time Fave Shows to Binge-Watch This Halloween

One way to kick off the holiday is with a marathon of the best Halloween movies of all time. It should not be surprising that horror films are popular this season, so our survey provided a list to choose which is their favorite horror movie.

On the top is The Exorcist, with 43.36% of the votes. Second is The Conjuring (14.44%), followed closely by Hereditary (13.13%). Others voted for The Shining (7.32%), The Ring (5.56%), and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (3.55%).

Even better than movies are TV shows, especially now that several platforms, such as Netflix, offer good horror shows. From zombies to vampires, witches, and a bunch of other creepy creatures, our survey has listed old, and new horror shows to find out which reign supreme.

The Walking Dead holds the crown as the favorite Halloween TV show for 47.93% of the masses, while The Addams Family for 19.33%. Third place goes to Sabrina the Teenage Witch (7.18%). The Purge and the All of Us Are Dead series come next with 7.18% and 6.83%, respectively.

Even if Halloween is over, more holidays are upcoming this winter season. The most awaited events and days in winter around the globe— Christmas, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and New Year– the festivals and special days where family and friends come together to celebrate little moments are just around the corner.
